Crow Hunting

Widow maker: I would have loved to have seen that. The biggest flocks I've seen were along the Mississippi River when we were ice fishing. Probably migrating up the Mississippi Flyway, but nothing like what you encountered

NY has a season that runs from Sept thru the end of March. We can only hunt them on Fri, Sat, Sun & Mon during the open season.

Myself and a few friends have called for them and gunned a few down a bunch times just for something to do. Haven’t done it for quite a few years at this point. It’s pretty challenging, and they are smart. Never gunned huge numbers, but there certainly isn’t any shortage of the things.

I have never heard of a Crow Contest here in NY. If there ever was one, there won’t be any more. NY genius politicians have made all high kill hunting contests/tournaments illegal. We can still have Big Buck contests or Heavy Turkey contests, but they’ve banned coyotes, fox, woodchucks etc where it’s a numbers game.

It’s a hoot living here!

We dabbled in it last year and had fun. Never killed more than 7-8 on a stand and would end the day with less than 20 most of the time. We have a season for some reason, but the landowner gets a nuisance permit. Crows will tear up a turkey nest so they got to go!! We did learn they are SMART! It ain’t just going out a shooting. You better be decked out in camo head to toe and have one heck of a hide.

Many times in the spring while I am sitting making some lonesome hen yelps and talk I have had crows get right down just 8'-10' off the ground staring intently trying to see the turkey that they hear. I know they are looking for a nest to raid.

Mn there is a spring season(ended march 31) and a summer/fall season. Can't leave crows in the field. I think there still is a "doing damage" exemption for the rest of the year. I know of one Saturday morning "tournament" out of a gun club. More of a social hour after thing(bbq/beer).
