CZ .17 REMINGTON FOULING/CLEANING???

I read the post below on the CZ 527 .17 Remington Varmint and I want one! No one in that post mentioned fouling or how often they have to clean while shooting. How about it, how much does the .17 foul? Average amount of shots between cleaning? I already have a 17 bore guide, cleaning rod, & accessories. Thanks for any information.

Jim, what are you going to use the rifle for?

I had two Sako Vixens. My load was hot, but a standard load for many, 24.0g of IMR 4320 with a 25g bullet. I had to de copper every 25 shots, and the velocity was 4150.

Many Remington 700's, and shot a hot load of Win 760 with the 25's, at 4100. De copper'd every 60-70 shots or when bullets started hitting the ground 25' in front of me.

Custom barrels such as Lilja, Shilen, Pac Nor would go longer, but around 125 rounds, the powder fouling starts destroying bullets.

We found that if we shot a load of 322, 2015 around 3850, that our shot strings would go much further because the powder charges ran 21.5-22.5g of powder.

Jim, buy good bronze bristle brushes by the dozen, and each brush is good for 100 strokes max, throw it away. Great copper solvent is a must.

Bullets that use a J4 jacket(custom) foul less than HOrnady bullets...take that to the bank.

I wish I could talk you into getting a Lilja barrel chambered with a zero freebore reamer because 17's do NOT like a lot of bullet jump for best accuracy...I have shot the barrels out of numerous 17's on the p. dog and squirrel fields.

17's are very, very unforgiving of copper and powder fouling, you have to be on your A game with a good cleaning regiment.

Good luck

Keith.... does that say b b bbbrush!?!?!? And all this time I held you in such high regard.... lol, to each his own bud. Men's choices in barrel cleaning are about like their preference in women. Odds are none of us are wrong.

ackleyman, Thank you. I'm a 65 yo disabled vet & mostly bench shoot for accuracy & reload for my hobbies. Occasionally my buddy will drive me around on the ranch & shoot varmints & such out of a truck. I can get a 700 Classic or a CZ527 in the .17 Remington, which do you think best? I found a new in box Remington LVSS or Rem.700 Classic in 221 Fireball. Do you think this would be a better choice? Thanks buddy,

Dang I wish you would've asked me that question. I love the 527s.... even named myself after them

Sorry CZ527, I will ask your opinion. Remington 700 or CZ527? .17 Remington or .221 Fireball? I have Swift's & a 22-250 but want something smaller & quieter. Thanks,
Jim D

Don't expect a 17 Remington to be quieter. It has a very loud and distinct crack to it.

If you want something a bit quieter (as well as cuter) then the .221 is the way to go. I love both my .17 Remmy and my little .221 FB but when it comes to noise there the little Furball is a lot softer. Not that much of a surprise as it burns about 10 grains less powder.

And I have owned both the M700 Rem as well as the CZ 527 in .17 Remington and I will give a most enthusiastic nod to the CZ. Just a heck of a fine shooting and good looking gun. Priced right too.

I'm a big 17 Rem. fan and have owned several since they first came out. To be honest, I have never had to clean mine as often as others have, but I've never shot mine over a PD colony either. Groundhogs, Fox, Bobcat, Coyotes, and paper targets pretty much covers my experience. A Lilja barrel does clean up much faster than factory barrels and they are soooo accurate.
A good one piece cleaning rod, good bronze brushes, a cleaning rod guide, KG 1, Wipe Out, and Lock Ease is your close friend when it comes time to clean.
A 221 would be another nice choice, but I like the 204 a lot.

I have been a big fan of the 17 Rem for many years. Yes it has a loud crack and does foul frequently as has been observed. Barnes CR-10 is my friend when dealing with copper. With my 700 Classic I eventually ended up fire lapping when the erosion started to cause issues and it restored not only the accuracy but increased the number of shots between cleanings. Currently shooting 30 gr bullets from Todd Kindler until my stash runs out. I'm using 17 Rem for fur targets and have quit using it for Pdogs as stacking up numbers has lost its appeal.

I might be the exception to the rule but I havent found my CZ 17 Remington to be overly prone to fouling. Overall I havent found 17 Remingtons to foul anymore than my 220 swift or other fast varmint calibers but maybe I am not as picky as others. All i know is that my 17 hits whatever I point it at and shoots small little groups on paper when needed.

Funny that you mentioned that. I just came in from the garage where I had been cleaning my .204 and my .17 Remington. I spent a few enjoyable (but chilly) hours yesterday out popping a few sage rats with a friend. The weather forecast looks bleak for the next few days so decided to clean them well and put them away for a week or so. A few patches (no brushing was needed) and all was clean and ready to go back into thes safe. Both barrels are aftermarket (Criterion and Lilja) and that helps too I know.

Other than of course having to use smaller cleaning gear to clean my .17 calibers with I find it no more of a chore than my other larger bores.
