CZ 550 Varmint Laminated Rifle Problem

I recently purchased a CZ 550 Varmint Laminated rifle in the .22-250 caliber. However, every time I wipe the exterior of the barrel with light oil (BALLISTOL SPORTSMAN'S OIL), a reddish-orange color shows up on the cloth. I am a bit concerned about the finish on this NIB rifle. Could the finish be wearing off? I have also tried Rem-Oil with the same result. Additionally, I have contacted CZ (there reply was that my situation sounded normal since the blue finish is really just a controlled rusting process). I really don’t agree with CZ’s answer, because I don’t have this problem with my other CZ rifles.

Any suggestions, comments, advice would be appreciated.

I have had this happen on several different brands of guns including Remington, Browning and CZ. This has never been an issue. I use CLP (Break-Free) on the the exterior of all my guns.

If it's new in the box, I would assume it's probably cosmoline like DrCoyote suggested. Is it a shiny blued finish, or parkerized? If it's just a blued finish and you don't see any apparent signs of rust on it, then I would think it would have to be cosmoline. Parkerized or bead blasted finishes tend to give of rust like you are describing. Keep rubbing it down with gun cleaner until it stops. You might try a different cleaner also to see if it works any better for you.

DRCoyote: I have 4 CZ's and use the exact same product, Balistol, on them. Never seen any red. However, that said, just your care of the firearm is going to stop and prevent ANY rust that might be there. By the way, bluing is just controlled rusting.

DrCoyote,

I have two cz's and they both do/did the same thing. After three years of hunting w/ them they still look new,it's nothing to worry about IMO.
I 'think' i read it was the salts in the blueing process,as i said i think!
I just kept putting on oil and rubbing the metal and it all but quit.Best of luck Mike

I see this a lot on cz,s in the shop, my opinion is, its rust. Blueing on a cz is never gonna win any medals, in short, its poor. I had a 527 hornet, that had a streak of rust, running from one end of the barrel to the other, and it was actually UNDER the blueing. I hadnt noticed it when i bought it, keep it oiled , thats all you can do.

I don't see any rust. The barrel looks fine. Perhaps the rust is below the blueing...Anyone else agree?

Thats the thing, you dont see it, until you wipe it over. feel the finish on a cz, especially the 452 rimfire,s, its rough, the blueing is dull, and it holds rust.

I have a few CZ rifles and handguns and have never had a problem with the blueing on any of them. The blueing on my 527's and my 452's seems to me a high quality gloss finish. I have always been impressed with the blueing job on all of mine. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
