Dead Coyote pattern and penetration pictures!

This morning I shot a few shells at some paper using my new Carlson's Dead Coyote Choke. I was hoping that Federal 12 ga 3" Premium, 1-7/8 oz of lead copper coated BB's would pattern pretty good compared to the Hevi-Shot 3" Dead Coyote loads. I don't like the price of the Dead Coyote shells. I ended up shooting the Hevi-Shot Dead Coyote, the Federal 1-7/8 oz of BB's and a 2-3/4" duplex reload with nickel 2's and lead "T" shot in it. The 3" Dead Coyote load with 51 pellets in it kicked a$$ on the Federal 1-7/8 oz of BB's at 40 yards. I shot at paper that was 22" by 28" with a 3-1/2" bulls eye. The paper was put on 3/4" thick plywood. The nickel # 2's and the copper coated BB's at 40 yards just barely went 1/8" to 1/4" into the plywood, some of these pellets I can see just sitting flush into the plywood.

The Hevi-Shot Dead Coyote load won the penetration contest on the 3/4" plywood. This picture is the back side of the plywood. None of the nickel 2's or the copper coated BB's went through the 3/4" plywood at 40 yards.

The Federal 1-7/8 oz of BB's put 53 total pellets on the paper, 16 pellets in the 12" circle and 3 pellets in the bulls eye.

The Dead Coyote load has about 30 to 35 less pellets in it than the Federal BB's load has. The Dead Coyote load put 47 pellets on the paper, 20 pellets in the 12" circle and 6 pellets hit the bulls eye at 40 yards. I shot a little low and to the left so the pellet count should have been even better.

The Hevi-Shot Dead Coyote load did pattern much better but it was the penetration on the 3/4" plywood that really impressed me the most.

Thanks for the review. I've been debating buying that high priced stuff, guess I'm going to have to break down and get some. That's a nice 40yd pattern.

That's a good post, I've been going to go out and do the same test. Thanks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif GENE'O

Awsome, thanks for posting that, the pictures speak for itself...

The Dead Coyote load you shot at 40 yards, that's five in the yotes coconut and several other hits in the heart and lungs. Awsome stuff... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I wonder how 3" #4 buckshot would have done with 41 pellets??

The BB's werent that bad you scored some good hits..

I think this stuff is going to be just fine at 60 yards or less....

I was going to do the same test but was going to try 3" #4 buck as well. That is what a friend told me he prefers. I was hoping the dead coyote load would not win because the stuff is expensive.

What choke you using? I have been playing with OO and OOO buck out of a cylider bore at 25 yds with decent results. But would like a little more range.

I have never had a problem killing coyotes with my lead "T" shot reloads or with the Federal Premium BB's at 40 yards and less. Most of the coyotes I shoot with a shotgun are at less than 30 yards. It looks like the California DFG is going to make the area I hunt in a "lead free Condor zone" so that is why I bought a some Hevi-Shot Dead Coyote shells. Now I need to try some of the Remington Wingmaster HD shells in 3" BB's. They have a $15.00 rebate per box of shells for up to 10 boxes of shells through January 15th of 2008. My whining and crying won't be as loud at $2.00 per shell as it is for $3.50 a shell. Have any of you shot any of the Remington Wingmaster HD shells?

I have a remington 870 12 gauge shotgun, and it came with modified and full chokes, what is a good choke to use on the dead coyote loads, i was hoping to no0t have to spend anymore than $30 on a choke.

thanks guys

Shakey Yankee, today when I shot the paper to check the pattern of the Dead Coyote loads I used a Carlson's Dead Coyote choke that I just bought. In the past I have used a modified choke for coyotes with lead loads. As tight as these Dead Coyote loads shoot through the Carlson's Dead Coyote choke I may use a Modified or Light Modified choke.

NCVARMINT, Carlson's Chokes extended sporting clays chokes can handle Hevi-Shot and they are not real expensive. I think I would get a modified choke.

NCVamint, buy the Carlson Dead Coyote choke tube from allpredatorcalls if you want to shoot the dead coyote loads.

If your going to shoot just buckshot then a modified choke would be better.

The Dead Coyote choke tube throws buckshot pretty well too!!

I have a stash of DC ammo, just in case the lead ban in the condor zone gets a green light. But on this latest road trip hunting, I made a lot of shots on coyotes, including 61 yard and 69 yard shots using 3.5" lead #4 buckshot, Carlson's/Cabela's extended full choke, Xtrema II auto. It puts everything in a 30" circle at 44 yards on the pattern board. The longer shot was going away, and that means a lot of penetration to stop one from the backside. It didn't kill instantly, but it anchored the coyote. The 61 yard shot was to the frontside and a couple of pellets to the brain turned that coyote's lights off immediately. Most guys are not going to like the kick from 2.5 ounces of lead though.

DC has gone up from ~$2.60 to $3.20 per shell in the last 6 months and lead is about $1.35 per. Meanwhile, .223 can still be had for 45¢, if money is the issue.

Thanks Bob.
Do you know what the actual bore of that choke is ?
I have been using an Extra-full extended turkey choke (.665 bore, .064 constriction)w/ #4 buckshot.
I wonder if the Carlsons Dead Coyote is a tighter or more open choke than I use.
Thanks
PC

Looks like I might have to break down and test some of that Dead Coyote stuff. I shoot good groups with the #4 Buckshot but always wanting to do better! BTW, good groups!

Nahuatl, I don't think I could pattern those 3-1/2" shells. I was afraid to pull the trigger on my 3" lead loads with 1-7/8 oz of shot while shooting at paper. I don't even notice the recoil when I am shooting at coyotes. Is the Xtrema II a little lighter on the recoil than the Cynergy?

Pine Cone, I don't know what the restriction is on the Carlson's Dead Coyote choke.

I am still looking for feedback and or information on the Remington Wingmaster HD Predator and waterfowl shells. Has anybody shot any of them?

Can I use my Turkey choke tubes out of my 12 guage for Dead Coyote and buck to keep tighter patterns at longer ranges safely. I have shot 10 guage slugs out of them with amazing accuracy at 100 yards from a 30" barrel.
