Decoy Dogs! The truth...

Thanks for the reply Hitman. I doubt I will ever use them for decoy work but I would employ them on wounded coyotes and coons. I hunt a lot of shelf rock with my Jack Russells. They work well but I still lose a lot of coon because my dogs don’t have enough grit to drag them out. I am sure a good hard jagd will cover me in that department.

I am still greatly interested in decoy dogs though. I wonder how an Airedale Border Collie cross would work out or a cur/collie cross. Pure dales and Mt. Curs are popular but I think some collie or kelpie blood would ad a dash of obedience as well as intelligence making training easer. Have you hear of any crosses like those I just mentioned?

Good hunting.

Q-Wagoner,
Yes, I've heard of crosses with various stock dogs. In fact I had a 3/4 Kelpie 1/4 hound cross once. She was a good dog until about 3 years old. Then she figured out those coyotes can sometimes hurt you, so she started sitting on the hill behind me and not going out.

Stock dog crosses are more obedient, but are also smart enough learn how to avoid gitting bit. I'm sure there are exceptions, but sooner or later most will become less effective for you. BTW, I'm talking about spring and summer use of Decoy Dogs here. I think Randy has just the ticket for fall/winter.

I haven't had any experience with Airedale's or Airedale crosses, so I can't help you there. I have seen Cur crosses that worked good, but didn't really handle any better than a full Cur. All of the good Cur's I know handle well. Cur's are a fairly bidable breed.

Q-I was talking to an old ADC man (40 yrs experience) in Craig,Colorado about using Airdales. He uses Curs and really has no use for Airdales. They chase and don't want to bring em back to you. I took that to mean real hard headed and more of an aggrevation. I'll tell you his name-he makes some really great shooting sticks, if you tell me how to get in touch with Vern Howey.

Rob, what took you so long? that was only 9 min time lapse for the answer. I guess Q- won't know who I was talking about....

come on yote /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif you can tell me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I talk to oll Vern at all the conventions but I never thought to ask him where he moved to after the big D. He does have great shooting sticks. I have 2 pair. If ya call him pic his brain a little. What that man don't know about coyotes probably don't need Kknowin.

I want to stay on the good side of you, so I'll tell you his name. Bruce Inness pbx XXXXXXXXX. The same one Ed Wimberley uses in Operation Predator video. $24.00 post paid. (The sticks.) He is really a great guy to talk to and a wealth of information. I'd like to meet Ed, I hear he's one of a kind.

Yotecaller I hope you don't mind but I edited the phone # out of your message.

If you want to repost it then feel free to do so and I apologize, I just didn't want you to get your tail in a wringer with the guy if he started getting some calls from some folks he didn't want to talk to.
Got to remember that not everyone who views this site is on our side.

I personally would send the number via e- mail.

Again I just wanted to give you a chance to think about it a bit , if you still want to post it then go ahead.

PS, Randy hope you don't mind me butting into your forum and messing things up, just trying to keep a fellow hunter out of hot water.

Craig,
I posted Bruce's number a month or so ago with his permision, but I just spoke with him again to check and he said go ahead and post it again. It is 970-824-4289. He also wanted me to post in the classified section.

Thanks for watching out for us. I wouldn't want my number on the www. I've gotten a few nasty e-mails already.

Craig, I didn't give it much thought, but it makes sense now that I think about it. Thanks for keeping me in check. We're here to learn, exchange info, and have a good time doing it. Don't want to ruin it.

Yeh But Hitman,
How am I supposed to write you a nasty E mail if I don't have the address? By the way, it is good to see you over here sharing some knowledge with us. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi Rich,
I stop in once in a while when I have time. Mostly just read to see what I can learn. I think you have my e-mail address.
