Determining Max range for buckshot on yotes?

I'm shooting a Winchester Super X2 with 3" Federal Premium #4 buck out of a Kicks Buck Kicker tube. My question is, What criteria do you use for determining max range of #4 buck? I think my set up shoots extremely well but I'd like to pattern it using some kind of standard. I have patterned it out to 50 yards at pie plates. I put the plates on an old medal sided building so I can easily see my entire pattern. I would guess it puts four hits in the pie plate on average at 50 yards with the pattern being very even around the plate. Alot of the buckshot would hit the a coyote that does'nt hit the plate. I would guess the pattern is 30" in diameter. I would like to find some life size coyote targets and actually count the hits in the heart and lung area as well as head and spine. What methods do you guys use to determine max range?

I would want eight or ten holes in the pie plate every time. I like to use a large sheet of paper for backstop so that I can tell where most dense portion of pattern is striking in relation to point of aim.

I agree with Rich. I'm a #4 buckshot man in 2 3/4 inch.

Buckshot looses alot of poop out at 50 yards.
You need a dense pattern to really dispatch a coyote properly at 50 yards.

But who really knows the difference between 40 to 50 yards when the yote comes chargin in and your all excited.

Guess your just going to have to go out there and see what you can do. Good luck.

Cut it down to 0 to 30 yards and your in there. #4 Buckshot at 30 yards your only alittle over 1000 feet per second. But your energy is only 50 foot/lbs(factory). Even with a six to eight pellet "Hit" Lungs,Heart,Liver and No Nerve or Major Structural damage. Your coyote is going to have plenty of poop left in him.
If you reload. I can give you some pretty hot load tables.
If you don't reload. Maybe you should consider it. Single Loaders are about $20. And you can load a dozen shells in an evening watching TV.
Your own handloads are the ticket if you want to really dial in that special "Nuclear Ballistic Coyote Thumper". Mike

I guess all of those coyotes I have dumped with copper plated #2's or BB's at 45 yards never heard the 50 feet or the 30 yard theory.

Each shotgun is different, but I pattern my own shotguns using various chokes, shot sizes and brand names of fodder before I go hunting. I can also assure you that seven #4 Buckshot holes through the heart and lung area of any coyote at 50 yards is gonna rug him out. I don't remember for sure just how many coyotes I have called and killed with a shotgun, but it was a heck of a lot of them and maybe even more than that. I do not make a post like this from opinion only. I got my results from actual field testing.

Thanks guys, Both informative and humbling. I guess my gun does'nt shoot as well as I thought. Although, I have killed yotes at 50 yards and maybe even a little further than that. Pellet count in pie plates could have been more than I said since it's been along time since I first tested loads and chokes. Going by memory always gets me in trouble. I'll try again tomarrow and post results. I was just wondering if it had more reach than 50. I'm with Rich on the 50ft and 30 yard thing. My gun with the above load shoots a perfectly round pattern about 16" in diameter at 30 yards. Lots of holes in the hide at that range.

Rich, Maybe you already said but what is your set-up for #4 buck and how far can it put 8 in the plate? Do you think life size cut outs would be a better way to test? No sense in not counting shots in the head and spine right?

Mo Yote,
My most effective rig right now is a Browning BPS "Gamegun" with the short barrel and iron sights. It has a Kicks "BuckKicker" tube on it. I am going to do a search and try to find the thread where I did all the testing with this setup. I will come back here and let you know where the thread is after I find it.

Thanks Rich, That was most helpfull!!! Why didn't I just do a search in the first place??? I'm going to go out and pattern some more loads today. Find out for sure what my gun is doing at 50 and beyond. Post results tonight!!! I've got some 3 1/2" Federal premium 00 buck. Is this safe to shoot through my Buck Kicker or is it to tight?
Did Shotgun ever send the Briley choke for testing. If so how did it do? Oh almost forgot, how do I get my hands on one of your howlers?

rich,
as far as the 50 ft estimate goes, that is as far as i can hit anything with buckshot. believe me when i say i've tried it in 7 different shotguns and most of those guns with at least a couple of different choke tubes. IF the question had been asked about BB or 2s my answer would have been different. i am a proponent of federals 1 5/8 oz copper plated, buffered 2s. i have killed coyotes with them at close to 40 yds, and my pattern testing indicates that they'd be ok a little farther than that. i have friends who swear by buckshot, but they make a lot of excuses after the shooting is done.

OK guys I shot several loads this evening. I shot Federal Premium 3" & 2 3/4" #4 buck, and Winchester Supreme 3" 4 buck. I shot some Remington Nitro mags 3" 2's not copper coated. I also shot the big bad 3 1/2" Federal Premium 00 buck as well as various turkey loads consisting of Federal, Remington, and Winchester. Just looked at pattern density with the turkey loads and 2's. Didn't count hits on a turkey target (try that later). 2's seemed to throw good patterns to about 40 yards.

Turns out my memory has not failed me (yet). I was close anyway!!! The 3" Federals shot best averaging 6 hits at 50 on pie plates. The Win 3" and Fed 2 3/4" shot about the same with 4 or 5 hit average at that range. All seem to be marginal according to what you guys have to say. Although as I've already stated I've killed yotes at 50 and maybe a little further. I know, I know I may have killed yotes that far but sooner or later I'm going to get burned with my guns marginal performance. Point well taken you, don't have to say it!!!
The 3 1/2" 00 is much better at this range so I'll be doing more testing with 00 and #3 buck in different lenghths. Post results of that if anyone is interested. But for know this 3 1/2" stuff will do the job out to 60. I only had a few on hand but it will put 4 in the plate at that distance consistantly. Surely 4 pellets of 00 would be enough for yotes at 60, Right??? Be hard to hit a running yote with it at 20 or 30 yards. The patterns were very small at those distances!!!

As a side note, I think this choke is going to shoot turkey loads pretty good. Patterns look good anyway!!!

Rich I'll send ya an PM tomarrow about the howler. Thanks!!!

mo yote,
if'n i had a shotgun that would keep 6 pellets of 4 buck on a garbage can lid i would use it. i have never seen such a gun/ load/ choke combination. i would love to be shown.
