Dog training question?

I got my shock collar today and started working with my dog to make him come to me when i tone him. At first i had to do some shocking to get it done. then after i shocked him he wouldnt leave my side, so i had to have my 5 year old hold on to him as i walked 20-30 yards away then i'd have my son let go, then i would hit the tone button and say come, after 5-6 times of doing this, he'd come as soon as he heard the tone. The problem i have now is he doesnt want to leave my side. I'm hoping he's not like this every time i put the collar on him, id like him to run around while we're calling coyotes. Will more time with the collar on let him loosen up a little and know that he isn't going to get toned/shocked everytime he leaves me? Anything i can do to encourage him to roam around?

If he likes to chase things throw a stick or retrieving dummy while he has the collar on and let him chase it. It will build his confidence on leaving your side. You might have to encourage him a bit at first but as he learns he won't get shocked every time he leaves your side his confidence will start to grow. Hope you started out on the lowest level possible to get his attention. When you get into some very distracting situations like being face to face with a coyote you will probably have to increase the level a few times to remind him to come in. You also need to reenforce this command in 4-5 different locations for him to be completely reliable.
 
I did start low, actually started with tone then to level 1, 2, 3, he acted like he couldnt even feel them, so i turned to 4 and he felt it. This is on a tritronics, 6 is max
 
Is there another way i can train him to come back to me when he we are calling and he gets to interacting with a coyote? I'd seriously rather not shock him, i dont like doing it to him, i just am not sure how else to train him to come back other than to a tone.
 
I've trained alot of dogs to the tone collar and never shocked them. Start them on a check cord to the "come" command. Then mix in the tone and "come" command. Then just the tone. After that, I use the tone to tell them come here, in the yard, in the field, etc... Very rarely do I shock a dog.

awesome i will try that for sure! i guess i'm a bit of a softie with the ol pooch but it kinda seems like socking your best buddy in the gut!
 
The tone feature is a very useful tool, but like Devin said you can ruin a dog really fast with one too. Air on the side of caution.....

i will have to disagree. it isnt the collar, its the finger pushing the button that ruins dogs. a collar is a wonderful tool if used correct.
 
elkmaster, be sure and reward him when he comes. alot of praise and excitment goes a long way. maybe even a treat. it is funny how much they will wag their tail when u give him a high pitched atta boy with some excitment in your voice.

Lots of praise and enthusiasm, I also carry string cheese in my pocket, and peal off a little as a treat. Dogs will do a lot for some cheese.

This is what I do too.
 
Just make sure he completely understands the command and what is expected of him before you correct a behavior. I'm training a German Shepherd right now (not for hunting) and have found some free podcasts from Leerburg Kennels about dog training if you have an ipod. They are very informative and helpful.
 
Not picking on ya, but the first mistake was putting a collar on your dog the day you got it, and thinkin he "knows what it is". Teach all commands first, then use the collar to reinforce, what the dog already knows. For the "come back" shocking a dog is great if you want them at your leg, but if ya want them to range, shocking them when they are 100 yards away may be giving them a mixed message.
The check cord, and no shock seems to work best for me.I will then use a check cord and a tone, and tone the dog while I pet and love on them and tell the dog how great it is. Maybe my way is not right, but it works for me.
 
Just a thought, but when I put a e-collar on a dog I like to let them wear it for at least a couple of weeks if not longer Before I even turn it on. That way they dont associate the collar with the correction.

This coming from a guy who has had a bunch of collar wise dogs over the years.

And we keep telling guys with their first hunting dog that the first thing they need to do is go buy an ecollar!?

These things are not easy to undo.
