About 12 years ago when I was 12 years old, I was hunting rabbits with my trusty old black lab. She was a heck of a hunting dog and anything that she could get ahold of, she would kill. It was about a half hour before dark, and it was pretty cold with 6 inches of fresh snow on the ground and I was on the inside of a tree line sitting on a ridge overlooking a valley waiting for a rabbit to pop out that I could shoot with my 22 caliber Benjamin air rifle. I was sitting there quietly watching my dog work, when all the sudden she just stopped and was sniffing in the air. I just kept watching and noticed two coyotes working the ridge right to me. She barked a couple times and went running up the ridge as if to greet them. The coyotes just stopped and watched as my dog ran right up to them. They all kind of sniffed eachother then were running around the beanfield next to the tree line as if they were playing. They would both chase her until she would rear up and snarl at them. Then they would kind of back off and proceed with playing. To be honest with you, I was scared to death being only 12 years old. There was a small rise in the field and all 3 of them went over it, then I heard my dog yelp, as if bitten or something. Adrenaline took over and I charged over the hill and they were all still playing about 40 yards out, but none of them noticed me. I put the crosshairs behind the shoulder of one of the yotes, and squeezed the trigger. Knowing nothing much would happen, it started yelping as if bitten and I started yelling and waving my arms. The two coyotes took off running with my dog hot on their tails. They all disappeared for about 5 minutes, then my dog finally came back to me. It was kind of a neat thing to see. I was more worried about my dog than anything, but I could see how the way those two coyotes acted with my dog, that they could lure in another dog and easily take it down.
