Dogs killed by coyotes.

Wow...When I first read the headline, I'm thinking two smaller dogs, but a couple of labs?

Me being a lab kinda guy, that just triggered me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif. I'd be clubbing away at those things with my ski poles if I were in his shoes that's for sure.

no kidding about the ski poles,my first thought was coyote on a stick...

Haven seen an attack like that here but most of the land owners that I speak and hunt with have lost dogs, generally labs of bigger, to yotes. Sneaky little buggers send in a "playful" yote, lure the dog out of the yard and into the pack and then the pack kills the dog. Ticks the land owners off pretty well too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif Land owner generally has found the remains later when they are out lookin for their dog. One guy who I talked with lost a pretty high dollar lab to yotes. Needless to say it's open season on any and all yotes in the area of his ranch. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

One of the places that I hunt now came about because they were watching the neighbors dog while they were gone for the winter and the dog came up missing. Turns out it was coyotes.

A farmer in our area had two Astralin Healers killed. Same story one coyote came in and lured the dog away and pack then killed it. This was verified by the story told in the snow. A few days later they did the same to his other dog.Rifleman2

About 12 years ago when I was 12 years old, I was hunting rabbits with my trusty old black lab. She was a heck of a hunting dog and anything that she could get ahold of, she would kill. It was about a half hour before dark, and it was pretty cold with 6 inches of fresh snow on the ground and I was on the inside of a tree line sitting on a ridge overlooking a valley waiting for a rabbit to pop out that I could shoot with my 22 caliber Benjamin air rifle. I was sitting there quietly watching my dog work, when all the sudden she just stopped and was sniffing in the air. I just kept watching and noticed two coyotes working the ridge right to me. She barked a couple times and went running up the ridge as if to greet them. The coyotes just stopped and watched as my dog ran right up to them. They all kind of sniffed eachother then were running around the beanfield next to the tree line as if they were playing. They would both chase her until she would rear up and snarl at them. Then they would kind of back off and proceed with playing. To be honest with you, I was scared to death being only 12 years old. There was a small rise in the field and all 3 of them went over it, then I heard my dog yelp, as if bitten or something. Adrenaline took over and I charged over the hill and they were all still playing about 40 yards out, but none of them noticed me. I put the crosshairs behind the shoulder of one of the yotes, and squeezed the trigger. Knowing nothing much would happen, it started yelping as if bitten and I started yelling and waving my arms. The two coyotes took off running with my dog hot on their tails. They all disappeared for about 5 minutes, then my dog finally came back to me. It was kind of a neat thing to see. I was more worried about my dog than anything, but I could see how the way those two coyotes acted with my dog, that they could lure in another dog and easily take it down.

Coyotes know how to kill guys don't let them fool you.
Just this past Friday I walked four hounds in on what we
thought were 3 yotes turned out to be 6 they almost killed
one of the hounds at one point 2 yotes were dragin one
hound by the foot they would have killed it, if a horse
from the barnyard the yotes dragged the dogs into did not
stomp one of the coyotes. They all came out of the barn yard
after that a we shot a couple of times to break up the pack
we got 2 of the yotes the other 4 are still livin. We have
some pretty good hounds 1 coyote 2 hounds no problem
6 coyotes 4 hounds, those hounds were in big trouble.
coyotes would have killed one dog for sure if they did
not get out of that barnyard so we where able to shoot
at them. Would have been nice to have an AR might have
been able to get a couple more.
