Friends,
Does anybody find using e-callers to be cheating? And when I say cheating, I mean cheating the person using it. I think if you ask most predator hunters they would say that it is more than the kill that they enjoy. Some of my fondest hunting memories have come, not in the theater of the outdoors, but in my small garage. On many occasion I have sat at my workbench convinced that I had just tuned a reed that could call the weariest coyote or turned cocobolo into a shape that would oblige the truest tone. Of course, it only takes one line from a book or one suggestion from an APC member and there I am again convinced my last call was worthless but my next one will be perfect. Despite my fanatical preparation, the yote can have consistent victories, content to sit in the tree line laughing. At this point my calls get put in the glove box and I start reworking my calling techniques with my trust Dan Thompson. For me hunting is problem solving and I get most of my enjoyment comes from trying new techniques or developing new ideas. After reading many of your posts, I don’t think I am alone. Anybody can buy an e-caller, a gun, set up in the nearest field and kill a coyote, without any feeling of accomplishment or triumph. In a day when everything is “e”, e-caller, e-mail, e-business, should hunting be given reprieve.
……Oh no I’m writing to a bunch of anonymous hunters, in a chat-room, typing on an e-machine; I am one of them. The “e” revolution has taken hold of me too…. Gotta Go.
