e-callers and cheating

Did you really say they were "great performers"? WOW....you just might want to recant that statement! It might reveal a little too much about you...lol

Great performers.....wow.....great performers?

Who'd a thunk it?

Byron nailed it. I have seen with my own eyes yotes come to some of the worst rabbit distress sounds anyone has ever heard. I know I was blowing the call. I have also seen them run from an e-caller set because the other guy couldn't sit still. SKILLS are the KEY. Byron loads some of his own sounds on his e-caller so that means he MAKES the sounds and records them. HOW COULD ANYONE CONSIDER THAT CHEATING??? He MADE the sounds to begin with. I enjoy hearing peoples stories especially since I don't get to hunt much. I do not however want someone to label me as cheating because I take advantage of every possible thing I can. If that were the case Camo, Guns, Bows, Sticks, rocks are all cheating. God did not put you on earth with those things in your hands so it is cheating. He did however bless us (at least most of us) with enough sense to use whatever advantage we can find to exploit our prey.

Just food for thought and I am not trying to P*&& anyone off.

CHEATING?!? As far as I know, these are the only fellers I know who weren't "cheating" while they were hunting.

i equate using an electronic caller to people that use live bait. if you are a weekend hunter or weekend angler, sure,

take every advantage you can get. no sense spendin' four hundred bucks to get something to do the work for ya'. give me 400 and i'll sit upwind and call for you.

You can call my E-caller whatever you want! but as long as it's legal and I am confident with it I'll use it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'd say "night-hunting" is more cheating than using an E-caller (but that's another story)....... does anyone else find this topic annoying? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Before I comment on the specifics of this thread let me set the tone by saying something of a general nature. One of the most appealing parts of predator hunting to me has been the "Do it yourself-Joe Six-pack" level of involvement where the elitist snobbery is not as prevalent as "Big Game Hunting" where the dollar is turning the hunter into a procurement specialist. A lot of people who criticize the modern tools do not hesitate to dial 1-800 "Buy a Trophy" and confuse that purchased process with hunting. My concerns are that predator hunting with its "Buy a Hunt" options and "My method is the only option I will use" attitudes will alienate people from an activity that desperately needs a high head count to survive.
I came to this form to both share and acquire facts on my passion of wolf hunting. Until recently I thought that a wolf was one of the few trophy's that money could not buy. What I found searching on this forum was several threads about cheating with e-callers. This thread in particular starts out by asking a question that the submitter already had there own answer for and by doing so implies anyone doing otherwise is clearly inferior. The post starts with a bunch of chest beating about the purity and difficulty of there only method then implies even the village idiot could succeed with other methods because of their relative ease and lack of skill required. The implication is you can buy your way into success like a purchased big game hunt instead of having the skill, cunning and dedication of the total do it yourself person. There is also the implication that you are depriving yourself of the ultimate experience unless you limit yourself to one particular method. I have no problem with the method or the likely experience level of the submitter. I do have a problem in the critical nature of portraying other methods unless the submitter has the same level of experience with the method that the person he is potentially offending has. If that is the case let the games begin. I have had wolves called into less than 100 yards by mouth and my wife and I have film of calling wolves by mouth but I would never consider offending a mouth caller by implying an e caller is the superior method because it can do a better job under certain conditions. It took me over two years to call a wolf into less than a 100 yards with a e-caller but I do not qualify for the village idiot thing because I live thirty miles from the nearest village. No matter what your level of experience there is probably someone out there with more experience than you and I think alienating that potential source of information is less than wise unless you feel your method is perfected.
For the sake of hunter unity I would suggest that expressing the only method you use as being vastly superior is only efficient in alienating fellow hunters that for various reasons may not choose your method. I sincerely doubt if the attitude shown about hand calling won anyone over but can assure you at bare minimum it offended me because in addition to mouth calling I use an e-caller at somewhat less than a 100% success rate.
If you choose to limit yourself to one method and you can discuss it with the goal of a common exchange of techniques improving your method everyone profits. If your goal is to show your method to be superior and more challenging I would suggest you stay home and put toothpaste back in a tube for a challenge instead of offending others with your elitist mentality.
Since I have never turned by back on a spirited exchange at any level I would suggest that if we could exchange details of different methods of cheating with e-calls or whatever the submitter give there level of experience with all methods mentioned so everyone can determine if there comments came from the bleachers or playing field.
In summary almost any sport has its levels of percieved purity and I understand that and to each there own. The issue here is if implying your method to be superior offends others. I am not an expert at any level mentioned above but my goal is to exchange details of whatever legal method I choose to improve the total experience. Good luck in whatever legal method brings you to the result that is success to you.

Well I'm pretty new to this forum but not to hunting and I have to say, I think the argument about e-callers being cheating is just plain silly, guys. I mostly hang out in the hand call section because I collect calls and love to use them. I guess the only way I would feel cheated if I used an e-caller would be because I couldn't look at the call and wonder at the craftmanship of a foxpro or a loudmouth. I was on the e-call forum the other day and saw where a renouned call maker is going to get a custom designed e-caller made for him. I guess he doesn't consider it cheating, or he wouldn't have posted the fact that he's getting an e-caller.
Calls either hand or electronic are tools just like your rifle or ghillie suit or shooting sticks.
I know the next time you go out wear a loin cloth be barefoot, stand on one leg and throw rocks at em. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
