eastern coyotes vs western coyotes

Well I live right where the mtns pretty much end into the flat land of AL (All being cattle/chicken farms.....(chicken farm pits) are probably my favorite sets right now..free bait sets.. let along like 70% of my county is chicken farms.. so maybe that has to do with it..

along with being some of the poorest counties around ppl cant afford to buy thermal and such.. not trying to be rude about money... (just saying that because we have a very large hunting supply store that does not carry any thermal.. and I asked the manager why and he replied no one want them because of the cost..

along with having a massive national park right above me..

Maybe I am in a prime place...

and Sorry to anyone I offended.. and to everyone no having luck keep at it...

June has been ruff on me... 2 coyotes before the 5th.. then lets see about 35+ sets without see a single one...

but Maybe tonight will be different...

and to the ones who think I have not been killing that many... I am sorry you are either jealous or not putting in the hours I do or maybe its just luck.. I would say I avg 20+ hours a week hunting...

have a nice day and happy hunting

You havn't offended me and I have nothing against you but 20+ hours a week isn't a whole lot if you're night hunting. I know when I hog hunted at night down in south Arkansas (obviously hog hunting is different but in honesty is takes a whole lot less time than coyote hunting) I was doing atleast 5 hours a night ATLEAST 6 days a week. Some weeks 7 days and from 10 pm till the sun came up. Constant trap running and night stalks. One year from August to February we killed almost 300 hogs (276 to be exact) but I've known people who have doubled that in the same time period.

well.. all I know is what I have achieved in my time frame... Basically all I was trying to get across is most of my free time is scouting/hunting...

300 pigs that is a pretty good yr if you ask me....

I may not kill another one this yr.. but isnt going to stop me from trying..

I don't think anyone is jealous of you Jay. We all salute you for the numbers you get. Also, I don't think any of us discount what you said about the guy shooting 40 from his chair. That's doable depending on where a guy lives and the amount of coyotes he has. Circumstance dictates a lot. I heard of a guy who shoots them under a street light at his place. It can be done and more power to those who have great hunting places.

I will take some pics of some of my sets and areas so ya have a better Idea what I am working with... Sorry for being semi passive aggro... comes from welders lol..

That is a beautiful view, David. Looks like picture 1 & 3 are same view, spring and winter?
Those fall colors are gorgeous!

HM,

Yes, the photos are of the same location, Including the fall foliage one, and same as the first one I posted earlier with the fog over the mountains. The view is from the hayfield flat on the farm.

Carlos,

A bait bomb is a device that, when triggered by a coyote pulling on the bait, shoots cyanide into it's mouth. A coyote will only go a few feet. It's sudden death. Problem is, to my understanding, does not discriminate and will kill whatever takes the bait.

I saw one of those bombs one time, with a note to not go near it. My son saw one too. If they use something other than cyanide, then I don't know what it might be. Everyone says it is cyanide. Whether true or not, well, you know how stories go.

Old Cat,

The closest thing I have to that cartridge is a 7mm STW. It's a flat shooter, but I have to take it to Wyoming to use it. Can't see the forest for the trees here. LOL.

they have been used a lot around here, but the interesting thing is some may be getting wise to this trick. in pa. a couple years ago game commission set some out, & had no takers. land owner called old trapper & he is supposed to have caught 15. land owner here in w. va. had game camera pictures of coyotes walking by capsules.

welp finally saw some coyotes tonight to bad they were all 400+ yrds with no interest in getting any closer..

I blame my calling But at least I finally saw some after like 40 sets lol

Those cyanide devices you guys are talking about are M44 Getters. Been around for about 90 years. Have gone through a few design changes, spring loaded now instead of a pistol charge, but still the same basic idea.

Getting the coyote to pull them has always been the trick. And there have always been coyotes that just won't touch them, same as any other bait or trap lure.

Used to always see them deployed everywhere on public land around here. Getting to be almost uncommon now though. Too many people and pets and do-gooders everywhere, all the time, makes using them on public ground problematic.
