Eastern Washington Hunting

let's see you eastern washington boy's call on the westside see how well you do. i mean wetside. Rick

Rick I lived and hunted on the westside for 26 years, it's tough to get coyotes over there no doubt. I hunted all over the westside and have only seen a dozen or so coyotes in that time. The problem is cover, the shtuff is thick and catching movement in the thick stuff when everything else is blowing around is almost impossible.

I moved to the eastside and I would never hunt over there again. You and Bofire are certainly welcome to come over and try your luck around here this winter or spring. I'll caution you however, these dogs get hunted alot and they are very well trained on the use of electronic calls so it's not as easy to get one to respond as ya might think. Carl has my home number just call and I'll make room.

The shots here can break the bank on anything that will fire a commercial round. The area where I live and hunt makes a 243 seem like a BB gun at times. Other times you could be falling over every rock out there and have a coyote 15 feet away from you mousing and never think twice of your presence, it's happened to me right in my own front yard, some of them are just stupid and he died being stupid.

We can sit on my front porch and shoot coyotes at over a mile out if ya want to or walk across the highway and have them right up in your face. One of the coyotes I tried to get in the other day was in the back yard over one mile away but he just weren't interested in coming my way, though he did hear me callin' at him. I found him a few days later and we couldn't get closer than 650 yards and he rocketed out of the area, 16" barreled 223's don't do well in high speed pursuits at that distance /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The one I shot at out back a couple of days ago and missed three times was simply and error on my part, my 243WSSM was not zeroed with the ammo I happened to use on him. I checked zero and it was left 4 and down 3 at 100 yards, he was out at the 300 pin easily. I missed him by a mile but I got his attention anyways.

no it is getting tougher over your way for sure. i like the Ellensberg area. was alot of hunter's.. i like the desert like hunting over there. Rick

I have learned that there is a lot of guys that simply drive the roads in hopes of seeing coyotes out in pastures mousing. Then stop and shoot at them and call it hunting, many of them never leave the cab of the vehicle. These coyotes see a vehicle and they are leaving the area fast.

Heck they run if you stop 1/2+ mile away just to look at them through binocs.

+1 on that Thor! Maybe a mile. lol!

FAL, we have a bunch of those "hunters" here too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Interesting taking a drive on the back roads late morning after a snow. You can see where all the road hunters have been patrolling. Pulling off every so often to glass or shoot. Been like that forever though. Definitely makes for some cagey coyotes. Can't say I haven't taken some freebies myself. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

Good hunting

as long as we are all here, have any of you shot a bobcat around here. I know there has to be some, because I saw one in September at the end of my driveway while target shooting my bow. I have never called one in though.

Thanks Rick. It's changing fast. They are putting up windmills in some of what used to be good calling ground. Kind of a bummer. Just have to go a little farther I guess.

Good hunting

I got one back in 05. I've got two spots with cats. One has high numbers (seen 5 or 6) but it's so thick it's hard to call there. In the other area that has them I've seen 3 and killed 1. I spooked two out of the brush when setting up on a howling coyote a few years back and didn't have time for an offhand try. I keep calling that area a couple times a year and just can't get lucky. I think they travel quite a bit as I tracked one in the snow for over a mile once and it just walked in a straight line and went into some thick cover. Tried to call him out and all I got was a couple of coyotes. Can't complain about that though! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

What I'd like is some good Fox hunting but we don't have them. Anybody know if they live over on the west side?

Oh there are a bunch of fox on the westside. When I was patrolling the Redondo Beach area at night I would see 4 or 5 a night. Coastal areas are loaded with them.

My neighbor killed one last year, it's the first one he had ever seen, he had no clue what it was. I thought that was so funny for a guy that has been hunting all his life. I told him he needed to have it mounted, so he did. That thing turned out beautiful, it's a red with silver and black guard hairs.

I have not seen bobcat yet but I did see cougar tracks in my back pasture, I'm told there are a few around this area.

Thor, there are quite a few red fox on the east side too. They are mostly down close to the Columbia River around the orchards.

Good hunting

is there any decent fox hunting on public lands in the west side of the state? orchards on the east side are pry all private land so getting access could be a pain. a weekend trip over to the west side for some promising fox hunting doesnt sound to bad.

You are probably right. They just got done doing a land swap and traded off most of the state land around here to expand the public land around Wenatchee for elk hunting. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Hey another new member here. I have been in Washington for a few months now and finally got my residency and license. It is tough to find public land to hunt near spokane. I am going to try driving out toward the swanson lakes wildlife area and check out the BLM land. Anyone hunt out that way and how has it been for you? Lots of questions here but it is always tough to find areas when you are new. I would like to do some hunting with you all if you feel like it.

once again nice to be here and good luck hunting

I went to Swanson last saturday for the first time. didnt see anything, it was very windy and there was two others hunting the area.

Chilty24,
I'm new on this site, but I'ved lived in E. Wa my whole life. If you are interested i the swanson area, go down to the BLM offices on Fancher and get some maps. They will provide you with hundreds of square miles of land to hunt. Goose Butte, Eagle Lakes, Swanson, Telford. You should be able to find a dog somewhere.

I'm new to this site also and live over here on the westend. I'm basically new to predator hunting. The only coyotes I've ever taken was while I was out deer or elk hunting. I do have a game call and a couple of hand held mouth calls. I've tried calling a few times at night but so far nothing. The area I live in is mainly trees and brush so we find logging units to set up in.
I do have a quick question. When is the best time to howl for coyotes month and time? So far I've done a little howling but no answers. I've tried early mornings and late night. Is it best when its clear out or can it be overcast? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Bill
