Steven, Yes we do have elk hunting here. There are lots of outfitters who guide on both private and public land. I think all the nonresident tags have been sold out by now. The tags go on sale in either December or January for nonresidents wanting to buy over the counter tags. The deadline for applying for controlled hunts is also past. That is part of the reason a guy needs to plan at least a year in advance.
I know several outfitters but I have never hunted with any of them. There are plenty of good ones but you have to be able to do your part also. Be able to keep up with your guide, keep a positive attitude when hunting is tough, spot game, shoot straight, have the proper gear, that sort of thing. All of that put together will help your guide put you on a bull elk.
Keep in mind that elk populations can drop from one year to the next depending on the severity of the winter, predators, habitat, hunting pressure etc.. So some areas that had good hunting a few years ago might have less elk now. Thats the kind of thing you want to find out from state game departments before you sign on with an outfitter. Have you thought about what type of elk hunt interests you the most? Good luck Steven, and keep calling and doing lots of research before you send a check.
