Steve, check out www.ventures-outdoors.com. I booked a bear hunt through this guy a few years ago after a friend recommended him. My buddy had booked a bear hunt and a mountian lion hunt through him and was very pleased with both as I was with the bear hunt I went on. The owners name is Wayne Stufflebeam and is very nice and helpful. Might be some good info at least. Hope it helps. Lonnie

Steven, my best advice to you to be sure to do your home work. Make sure you get refences, if they don't have very many, go on to another. Be sure to call them and try to call people that had to travel a bit to get there. I would avoid folks that are in the same state as the guide. When it comes to pricing, check around and the same applies here, less is not always the best. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Steven, Not to rain on your parade, but if I were you, I would consider doing a lot of checking around and plan on going in 2003 or later. The reason I say this is good outfitters can be booked up a year or two in advance and you might find yourself jumping on with an outfitter that is not booked up for a reason.

Several questions you need to ask yourself are,
1)Do you want to hunt elk during the rut?(September bugle hunt)Everyone should hear a bull elk bugle at least once in their lives.
2)Are you looking for a wilderness pack in horseback type hunting trip where you stay in wall tents and rough it a little more?
3)Will any legal bull be fine with you? or is this a trophy hunt for you?
4)Or is the late season with hopefully snow on the ground more to your liking?
5)Do you want to stay in a cabin with hot showers and easier hunting?
6)What type of elk country or state interests you the most?

These are just a few questions you need to ask yourself so you can decide which type of hunt best suits you. Some states you need to apply months in advance just to get a tag or get in a drawing for one. Some of the best elk hunting is found in areas where it is a draw for a limited amount of tags. These you have to apply for way in advance.

Maybe you have killed lots of elk and been on many hunts that I don't know. I just don't want to see you rush into a hunt with a less than reputable outfitter just because you wanted to go this fall. I could tell you a few horror stories of nonresidents that came here and didn't do their homework before hand. On the other hand I know nonresidents who come here prepared and do very well on elk.

Like said above, do a bunch research then do some more. Ask yourself what you want from your elk hunt. Heck,Planning a trip like this is half the fun. Good luck on planning your trip Steven.

Hi Lonny Thanks For All The Help Im Doing My Home
Work. Do You Have Elk Hunt In Idaho.
Im also Looking At A Caribou To I Have Some Diffrent outfitters Sending Me All The Info.

Thanks Steven. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Steven, Yes we do have elk hunting here. There are lots of outfitters who guide on both private and public land. I think all the nonresident tags have been sold out by now. The tags go on sale in either December or January for nonresidents wanting to buy over the counter tags. The deadline for applying for controlled hunts is also past. That is part of the reason a guy needs to plan at least a year in advance.

I know several outfitters but I have never hunted with any of them. There are plenty of good ones but you have to be able to do your part also. Be able to keep up with your guide, keep a positive attitude when hunting is tough, spot game, shoot straight, have the proper gear, that sort of thing. All of that put together will help your guide put you on a bull elk.

Keep in mind that elk populations can drop from one year to the next depending on the severity of the winter, predators, habitat, hunting pressure etc.. So some areas that had good hunting a few years ago might have less elk now. Thats the kind of thing you want to find out from state game departments before you sign on with an outfitter. Have you thought about what type of elk hunt interests you the most? Good luck Steven, and keep calling and doing lots of research before you send a check.

Steven, we even have elk in New Mexico, you might want to call the game & fish here, and get a list of landoweners and outfitters, theres a lot of permits, outhere, cows and bulls, at a price!, any way good luck, I'm waiting for the drawing, results this month.

Private landowners are allotted a certain number of tags to dispense at their discretion. Many sell them to outfitters, but some don't. You might be able to get a list from the G&F. Landowner tags do not require you to put in for "the draw" and can be purchased by anyone. Try giving them a call, there easily could be some left if you talk to the right landowner or outfitter.

how much money you want to spend? How big of a bull do you want to get?

If I had to get a big bull and had 4000 in my hands I would be hitting the Jicarillia Apache Reservation. Lots of elk in that country and good fresh genes. They import elk in from over the country to keep the racks up.

The Gila has some good public land hunting, Vive Dall etc. These will be premium units and tags go for 756 if I remember right. I killed a nice 5 by 5 bull with mz on public land in unit 15A in 2001.

I think AZ is notorious for big bulls in unit 10 I believe. A guy could go into this unit blind and kill a big bull from what I hear. It may take 10 yrs to get the permit but well worth the chance at a 350+ class bull or better.
