Ethical responsibility (.17 hmr, et al)

It is commonly believed that Tennessee allows only rimfires and birdshot for small game (coyotes) during all big-game seasons.

Not true!

Muzzleloaders are allowed for small game, and not prohibited during big-game seasons.

I only get one shot, but she's a good one!!!!
 
I dont know how it is in your neck of the woods Crtr Gtr, but I wouldnt be caught in the woods during big game, deer, season around here calling for anything. Too many folks that get a gun in their hands one time a year, deer season. And, have no idea what they are doing. Good time to get shot. Scares me enough to be on private land where I know whos "supposed" to be on there, with orange on. Let alone, calliing predators.

What a great morning it was! While the armchair ballisticans and ethos police were staring at their monitors pounding out boredom inducing prose concerning ballistic coefficient, kinetic energy and why one shouldn't be using the 17HMR; I was out doing it. By 10:00 the rifle that can't do it, did. Two coyotes and one grey fox fell to the dimunitive rimfire,all with one shot apiece! I oughta be hung:)

I was trying to sit idly by, but now this thread has become an ethics issue :rolleyes: I have to admit /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I am amazed that anyone can really believe that they have cornered the market on ethics. And also how can they be so sure that someone else is failing to meet some bar. I mean, after all were talking about general statements/situations here. I certainly can only attest to the shots I am willing to take using an HMR and those that I choose to pass on. Q said a mouthful. I'm not earning my keep on fur (although I skin, tan, and and/or sell every Coyote I get) I hunt for the pure pleasure of dispatching vermin Coyotes, so when I pass on shots because the Coyote is too far away for one of my HMR shots I just smile and say, shucks should of had my CF. It isn't that big of a deal to me. I hunted with a bow for so long you get really used to passing on bad shots so when I have to do it with a particular firearm its just all in a days work. I DO enjoy using the HMR some days, and it IS certainly enough gun for my hunting opportunities, except for an occasional long shot as mentioned above. A big gun does not create skill, matter of fact it probably should make some nervous, because chances are the more it bucks the worse most shoot /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Just a couple of random thoughts:

There are lots of firearms that are "sufficient" (adequate, whatever...) for certain types of game, none perfect as far as I know...but I didn't say "perfect". What I would like to hear is an admission that there are some that are just are NOT sufficient (adequate...)

There is no such thing as "catch and release" hunting.

My questions is/was about ETHICS. I no longer give a rodent's rump about who does what with the .17 hmr, and I will continue to enjoy mine. I hope each of you know what you feel is your ethical responsibility is to steward our sport. You have helped me understand mine - thanks.

Top 5% shooters don't show up on the board asking questions about using a specific round/caliber/etc. Those in the "other 95%" group do. That says to me, at least, those asking the questions won't be making error free shots a high percentage of the time.

C-N-P, this was not an attack on you - I tapped your question for an example. If you meet your own standards, I am more than satisfied. Please don't take offense, there was none intended.

To all of you who took the time to respond, thanks. I guess I have decided that in the future, if I feel something is a bad idea, or even a good one, I will bring my best information to the board. Whoever wants to use it is free to. Then, I guess I just won't revisit the topic again, move on to other things. My ethics are served, others are free to use their own opinion (in the words of my Master's Professor, "no matter how screwed up it is")

One last comment for Cro-Mag: Yeah, us hunters/fishermen are in a sub-human class, but doesn't that raise the bar for us in terms of what we expect of ourselves? There are people who want to outlaw our way of life - do we need to be giving them any help???

Can't help it: W.M.Bell shooting elephant with his 7 mm Mauser (basically same as the .275 Manlincher)was using a 175 grain round nose solid bullet that could and did crush through 2 feet of elephant skull each and every time. Yes, shot placement was critical with only a 10" window to hit the brain BUT SO WAS THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE BULLET. If it were a polymer tipped VMax or Balistic Tip or the like it probably would not have made it to the brain cavity to drop the bull like the "hammer of Thor".
No doubt the Hummer can drop them, thank you, Chili, for the most recent examples and for superb shot placement. But when I see a post that is titled: "Is the 17 HMR a good coyote round?" or "Where is the best place to shoot a coyote with the 17 HMR?" it tells me that this person is probably not an expert marksman or extremely familar with firearms because he is asking a question that time spent with long guns and field experience can answer. Chili Rio and a few assorted others appear to have that experience and we have never seen them asked those questions because they knew what they could do and have gone on to do it. But for the neophite, and, yes, I know every one who posts on this board has deer hunted since they were 7 and knows how to handle a rifle, who has to ask those and other questions are probably undergunned with it.
 
Here in Kentucky, that one shot (chance) is hard earned. Yotes are not as plentiful as out west. I love shooting the 17HMR, and believe in the right hands and right situation coyotes can be taken with one. I applaud those that make that killing shot. I'm not taking my chances with that tiny bullet. Too many things that can go wrong with that little pill. Shucks, I seen times I wish I'd a had fully automatic 50 cal., (If I'd only married a woman who could sew), especially when you get several comming in at once, all in thick cover. Man, I want to get that coyote so bad. I'ts hard for me to wait for that perfect shot fellas. If I wait I get all shakey, my palms sweat, My eyes water, I basicaly get tore all to heck! That's why I perfer to take the shot when that yote first presents it, as long as it's a safe shot, and dosen't endanger any person or property. I don't hold it against anyone who hunt leagely with a 17HMR or a 22. It's just not for me here in Ky. for coyotes anyway. kyray

Why are your and whom ever others answers that are based on hard earned experinece the right ones and mine and whom ever else who has the opposite answers that are based on our hard earned experience wrong? We've had really good success with it and you haven't. Does that mean A)We are better shots?
B)That we know when to pass up a bad shot and you dont?
C)You have to kill every coyote that walks within 400 yrds and and we dont?
I'm going to say the answer to most of those questions are "no". If they are "yes" your right in saying the .17HMR is not a good Coyote gun (for you anyway)

I'm getting tired of the "I'm right and your wrong because I said so". Plus this ethic thing. What's with that? I was called unethical for using a Hummer. Then guys found out I was in a rimfire only area and guys then said it was ok (like I care anyway). But....if your not in a rimfire only area then it's still unethical. Are double standards an ok thing know? This all just getting me sooooooooooo pissed off. You's just don't get it!!!!!! There is no right or wrong to this it's all just one opinion vs anotherand its up to everyone to grow up and realize that and fight over usefull things like our rights to hunt.

Had a hummer or two in my day and luved every one of em. Ive seen coyotes shot so bad with about any cal you can name and they still run and still get away.Seen a fellow sunday shoot a runnin yote at over 700yd with an ARS Mini14 took 19 rounds. Ya know what I said "WoW" great shotS. Didnt want to bring up the ethical crap card on coyotes Save it for Big Game. By the way he was on that coyote all the way as you could see the bullets catching up all the way to the end.
 
Sorry peon, but I am a predator hunter. Any time of the year, if I choose. I will don my blaze orange and call coyotes (they can't see it anyway).

And I really don't know where your "neck-of-the-woods" is located, since you do not list any location.

Somehow, either by wit or dumb luck, I have survived a quite long hunting career, which included guiding predator hunters for several years.
 
Big Meat is just mad because he hasn't gotten a yote yet. (atleast the last time I talked to him.) Now that is not a flame! But this ethics crap has to stop. I have more ethics out there than alot of people. And when you flamed me just because you don't agree over the size of the gun. Well /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif !!!!! As far as setting the bar you've answered you own question in your reply. "what we expect of ourselves." The analogy that you can lead a horse to water but can't make him drink would surely apply here. One can only hope that the type of hunters that seem to concern you will read these posts on this round and glean from them what amazes me as a wealth of practical information demonstrated by a group of worthy hunters here using this round.

As far as the anti crowd, a guy could hunt in a 3 piece suit with matching Gucci (sp. ?) shoes, carrying a plasma rifle to eliminate any undo suffering of your quarry, you and I would still be hunters, doing what we love.

I wasnt flamin ya, not in the least. Actually kinda backin you up in a sort of way. Ill tell you where I am. Central Mo. Between KC and St Louis. Gets lots of folks that dont hunt any other time of year and lots of accidents because of it.

Dont know what I said to piss you off. I was actually, like I said, just talkin to you. If you dont want me too, I wont anymore. I apologize if it came off wrong. If you hunted around here, you would be more cautious too.

I damn near got shot last year by a road hunter well after deer season. Calling in a drainage ditch and one must have been coming in. Heard teh truck stop, bullet go by, then a boom. Scared the hell out of me.

You have some good members. I have as much respect for ChilieRojo as any hunter, predator and otherwise, as I have ever met in my life. BUT, if you dont fit in, you dont fit in. If it pissed you off that I was stating my experiences and cautioning you, if anything, then its obvious my views are not valued or accepted and you can ditch me now.
