Thanks Clint.

Never owned one, but a buddy of mine had the Aussie version which he shot at the range quite often. I found it ergonomic and accurate, it really felt "right" when I shoulderd it. But man, did it ever jar my jawbone with every shot!...seemed like it had a lot of vibration. Much more vibration than my Norc M14 had.

I have a 16" paratrooper model. I love it. They are one of the finest battle rifles ever made. Very reliable. Good accuracy. Mags are cheap. I'll never sell mine.

You bet! my old .308 Century Arms standard, thumper.

Trigger was very heavy & gritty. I pulled the front little plate off, & ground down the little "female cup" that the trigger return spring rested in. Doing so, reduced & "smoothed" out the trigger pull dramatically.

Mine was never real accurate with factory loads. But I loved to hear her roar, firing on fast semi-auto. I liked the noise /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

British army lent me one for a few years. They are good for man sized targets at 300 yards. I have a hankering for one, for old time's sake. They seem very expensive to me, $500 and I would be tempted

I used to build them things. I put one together using a DSA 243Win barrel and that thing would shoot 10 rounds inside a quarter at 100 yards....no not all day long either. But with slow fire and a steady bench it held it's own pretty darn well. The 308's I built were 2 moa and the finest battle rifle that ever was born. Since then I have sold them all and got totally into the AR stuff. There is a guy here in Washington State that builds some very nice FAL rifles and carbines. I looked at his stuff at some of the gun shows and his work is very nice.

great rifles. I owned one that would hold 1 1/2" 3 rnd groups. I let a friend talk me out of it. I am still kicking myself in the but over that one. One of the great things about these rifles is the adjustable gas porting system. With the right setting and the right ammo (the Canadian Military stuff was best that I found) you can set it up to almost no felt recoil. On the other hand I have heard of a few that do not shoot at all. If I was to buy another one right now I think I would buy one from DSA and spend the extra on one of their guaranteed tack drivers.

I remember reading Chuck Taylor's book on combat rifle shooting (forget the actual title). He (Vietnam war Army officer vet, Angola mercenary vet) stated that in his opinion the two best 'battle rifles' (as opposed to 'assault carbines' - difference being full-size vs. smaller cartridge) were the FN-FAL and the original AR-10. He saw a lot of both in action in Africa. He puts the M-14 rifle a notch below these two. The FAL has been nicknamed 'the right arm of the free world' and while I've never shot one I've never heard anything bad said or seen anything bad written about them.

Gotta love those big guns. And they will reach out a lot further than 300 yards, if the sights and ammo are up to it.
