Dollman...I bought a CZ "Varmint" .204 last year and it cost me about $600.00 + tax (around another $25.00) ,I aded a nice Leupold 3X9X40mm Rifleman black matte scope to it and its a great shooting Rifle.

They state the "Varmint" doesn't come with rings but when I opened the bax I had a pleasant surprise when I found the rings came with it...these usually run another $60.00-$75.00 and You have to be careful on which of the 2 (two) CZ ring You mount where on the Rifle...one has a small square key way in it and the other one doesn't so be careful on that and the barrel top has a notch cut out of it....just trying to give you a heads up on that.

I guess that is why we will play with wildcats and choose to reload.

The 221 FB case is a darling.

Well,,,, couldn't find it anywhere in the internet lingo dictionary (roll eyes) but this is what Wiki says.

"A fad is any form of behavior that develops among a large population and is collectively followed with enthusiasm for some period, generally as a result of the behavior's being perceived as novel in some way.[1] A fad is said to "catch on" when the number of people adopting it begins to increase rapidly. The behavior will normally fade quickly once the perception of novelty is gone.[1]

The specific nature of the behavior associated with a fad can be of any type including language usage, apparel, financial investment, and even food. Apart from general novelty, fads may be driven by mass media programming, emotional excitement, peer pressure, or even a desire to be outside social norms (counterculture). "

So I'd say you're right. It is a fad.

I do think the 17HH would have done better than the 17FB simply because of Hornady's better marketing strategies, but the lack of rifles at the peak of Varmint Shooting Season has been so anticlimactic, the interest seems to be dying off before it even got started.
Hornady might save it though. I mean, look what they did to the rimfire world with the Hummer. Time will tell eah?

Yes, but the 17 FB can be loaded down to cover what the 17 HH can do, then be loaded up to pretty smoke'n velocity. The 17 HMR covers the rest.

The usefulness of the 17HH is no more or less than that of the 22 Hornet in that caliber, given that the 22 WMR is below and the 221 FB is above.

Likewise for the 17HH, we have the 17HMR below and the 17 FB above.

If you reload, I would rather load down the 17 FB than mess with the Hornet's thin and long neck. We shall see for sure.

Yea,,,, but that long neck (as well having to head space off the rim) goes away when you Ackley or "HH" it. Course, that don't make it any thicker, but it turns it into something we can "sorta" tolerate as reloaders.
Not that I don't agree that the FB's a more versatile round in a superior case, but that dang 17AH really is an amazing round in it's own right with allot of pluses for the varmint shooter. Especially the fact that you're getting 3600fps with 11-12 grains of powder, which translates to less noise and barrel heat.
All that, and not having to make brass for it (IE; mess with that thin, long neck) should make it a winner for Hornady. At least I hope it is, because they really do allot as far as new technologies and products for this sport goes.
Again,,, "we'll see".

BTW, wiki says that if it succeeds it'll move up in the world from a fad to a trend.

Don't count on it coming with rings reguardless of where ya live. CZ Varmint model's don't normally come with rings, but some do get shipped with em inadvertantly.
He11,,, CZ can't keep track of which boxes are supposed to have rings when they write the rule book. What makes you thing they could keep track of which country the rifle is going to be shipped to when it comes off the assembly line and if rings are included for that particular country?

Bottom line,,,, Varmint model,,, rings are a crap shoot. American model,,, if the rings aren't included the dealer stole em and will more than likely try to sell em back to you.

Good luck.
