FFL transfer fees are awful!!

Person to person is $ 35 around here. But if you bring one in from out of state the costs increase. Lots of the shops charge $75 to $100 and then charge Ca. sales tax as well! I have a Guy that is much more reasonable.

The shop has to log the firearm into its permanent records, process your form 4473 and maintain it in their permanent records, run your NICS check, and then log the firearm out of their records. Then, the shop has to be prepared to research and provide tracing information if your gun gets stolen or lost and used in a crime. All this eats up time. It probably takes your dealer more time to do your transfer than it did for you to buy the gun online. Just wanted to clear that up....

When I made the comment about not doing business with this shop I was also going to say if they charge $75 for a tranfer I wonder what other unfair practices they support.

I'm all for supporting the local guy until greed takes over.

You're talking about 10 to 15 minutes worth of work. At $75 each I'd be willing to bet the owner wishes he could do transfers all day long.

Like I said, he's probably just not interested in doing transfers. He's not ripping anyone off. He's just discouraging transfers. I would probably just tell people that I don't do transfers rather than using price to discourage it.

No..that's far from it.

Some transfer customers can be a nightmare to deal with honestly.

Some are really easy to deal with, and streamlined, but some can be more headache than they're worth doing. Time is money, and of course transfers take time. Some transfers there's a good 30 minutes of communication, receiving of the firearm, and in-store time. Some there is 10 minutes.

Transfers are a great form of passive income for a gunshop, but the guys who shop around for the cheapest transfer also sometimes find the cheapest service too. It may not be the nearest gunshop that has the cheapest transfer fee, costing gas and time to go out of your way to get there. Some have odd hours, or odd policies as well.

For $10, I'd rather not do transfers, honestly. For a STOCKING dealer its not worth their time for $10. For a small pawn shop, it gets people in the door that otherwise may not have been coming, and is a small income stream.

We charge $25 for CCH permit holders, and $40 for standard public. The fee itself is supposed to put a "value" on the shops time, and also on their inventory. Obviously the shop doesn't make much money on a transfer compared to a firearm sale. Sometimes there is just as much, if not more, Training that goes along with a transfer than a sale. Having a mid-range transfer fee also encourages customers to buy local.

"What ammo does this take?" "Can you show me how to take it apart", etc.

Just my .02.

Go wherever you feel you get the best service at the best price, for a transfer.

Transfer fees will be on the rise now with inventory scarce. Many small shops will be closing up their doors soon as well, especially if they only charge $10 for transfers. Transfers can help keep the lights on, but they don't put food on the table, IMO.

My sentiments, also.

My place to receive xfers cost 20.00. This place does a large xfer business, but picks up side sales form, ammo, and accessories. They also have an indoor range which helps too so the new gun buyer can try out the new purchase asap in desired. It is also unusual that it is a woman owned shop and she has a large female clientele too. She provides a lot of training and personal service for the gals and they travel long distance for that service.

I can get xfer cheaper and a bit more convienent elesewhere but she is quick, well staffed and very helpful. Ive had others kinda plop it on the table and say good luck.

Neighbor is $25, and a guy down the highway is $15. My dad knows the neighbor, and he is the one receiving, so to the neighbor it goes. I am ok with someone plopping it on the table and saying good luck. I don't order guns that would usually be found in a gun shop, so I don't expect alot of gun shop owners I guess.

$20.00 to $30.00 going rate at our reputable gun dealers . All i can say if you dont like the tranfers buy whats on the shelf locally and that dont give you alot to choose from, i would rather pay the tranfer and get the gun i want, from what i have seen you can almost always find a deal on gun for the offset the cost of transfer weather it be on the internet or out of state dealer lots have free ship and no tax you just got to shop around.
