Ive been trying to down load my tracks and waypoints onto my
computer and not haveing any luck. Do any of you guys know if
you have to have the garmin map program as well as the trip and waypoint manager for your computer?

I would think that with the mapquest download from Garmin would be all you needed to install those on the GPS.
I know it works for my 295 nuvi.
You have to register your unit on garmin under "my Garmin" then it opens other possibilities.
gpsfiledepot has tons of good stuff you can use/do also.

It's easy to do if you use the Mapsource software that came with your unit. If you don't have it loaded on your PC you can download it here (it's a large file so unless your internet connection is fast you probably want to load it from the disc that came with your unit. You need the larger of the 2 downloads)

On an unrelated note if you need to replace your dog collars on the system there are some great one available from
DC 30 Dayglo collar upgrade

All my collars got pretty smelly after a year or so, they smelled like old swamp mud and they were all frayed. I just changed over to the dayglo replacements a couple weeks ago and they are great, I'm not sure if anyone else makes them cheaper but I do know these ones seem pretty nice. Much better than the Garmin originals.

No just the very top section is the update patch, if you click the download link that's listed as 57mb that is the whole Mapsource program. The patch is only 2.20 mb, it's kind of confusing the way they listed it.

Garmin mapsource is a program you have to buy. It comes on a DVD because it is bigger than 57 MB. I bought mine. Here is what the 57 mb download says.
"WARNING: This software will not work unless you already own a MapSource product"

Read the change history. It is the updates they have made.

I didn't notice that requirement....looks like he's gotta find the CD that came with his unit.

Negative, you can get it free. Read below.

Here's a trick to getting MapSource, and it works! Best part is, it's right from Garmin with no hacks or cracks & its free.

Download the Training Center:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=835

Install it

Then download the MapSource update:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

Install it.

You now have full blown MapSource, enjoy!

I called them not too long ago. They said to download the BaseCamp software. It does the same as the original MapSource according to the tech support person with whom I spoke.

Here's the link:

Casey,

You do NOT need to have a Garmin map program as well as a Trip and Wayppoint Manager on your computer. Here is why you may not be having luck transfering data between your GPS and computer. The Trip and Waypoint Manager program will need to be updated to the latest version after it is installed from the CD. The latest version contains the right drivers to establish communication with your GPS unit. Open Mapsource then on the top of the toolbar click on the HELP button then select UPDATE TO LATEST VERSION which will be version 6.16.3. After installing the update, reboot your computer so the new drivers will work to establish communication between the GPS unit and your computer.

You should now be able to download/upload waypoints, tracks, and routes by just using Trip and Waypoint Manager.

I suggest you also install freeware topo maps for your state on your computer from www.gpsfiledepot.com. This will enable you to install Garmin compatible freeware topo maps to the memory card in your GPS unit and also provide a topo map displayed on your computer. The Trip and Waypoint Manager application is one of several Garmin Mapsource programs. Therefore, you can toggle between "Trip and Waypoint Manager" and any other application such as freeware topo maps from gpsfiledepot.com using your Mapsource program.

Hope this helps

Has anyone actually tried installing these updates without having any Garmin maps on your system? I have so I cant try without uninstalling. I paid $80 for my Garmin Mapsource so I find it hard to believe that Garmin is giving it to you for free. You cannot install an update when there is no original program to update.

Sounds like an update to the original program. Have you tried downloading it without the original program?

BaseCamp link

Base camp still needs another program before it will work. Here is what it says.

"Installation Instructions
Download the Garmin BaseCamp update file into a directory on your hard drive. (i.e., c:\downloads).
Change to the directory in which you downloaded the files, (i.e., c:\downloads), and run the executable file (.exe). Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the update of your BaseCamp installation.
Notes:
Windows XP Service Pack 3 or later is required.
.NET framework 3.5 is required. A current version of .NET will be installed if needed.
1 GB of system memory is required, 2 GB of system memory is recommended when using BirdsEye Imagery or Garmin Custom Maps.
A video card that supports OpenGL version 1.3 or later is needed to enable the 3D view.
If you experience problems when interacting with the map views, please make sure that you have installed current video card drivers.
BaseCamp will recognize all MapSource products except BlueChart.
BaseCamp does not work with serial GPS devices. "

The website says the newest version is 6.15.11.0, so is there a difference?

Yes, I did that on my work PC because I wanted to use it there and I didn't bring my original CD with me. It was about a year ago, all I did was download the file and it worked...I'm not sure if they've added licensing restrictions since then or not.

fw707,

The website says there has been 2 updates since version 6.15.11.0 and here is a link to the latest version which is 6.16.3. http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

reb8600,

I am assuming your Mapsource program included another application for maps such as a 100K topo map set for the entire Unites States which is why it cost you $80.00. The Mapsource program by itself does not have any maps and is just a waypoint manager for Garmin GPS units which can obtained for free http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-install-mapsource-if-it-didnt-come-with-your-gps/

Yes, mine is the Mapsource with the 100K maps. I took it that the original poster dont have any maps on his computer. There for any of the other stuff will be useless to him.

reb,

I have a GPSMAP60 and I couldn't find my CD of Mapsource, (I purchased my unit in May of 2005).

I have since gotten a new laptop and was frustrated at not being able to install or retrieve maps from my GPS unit. I called Garmin, they pointed me to the link for BaseCamp, and after I downloaded it and installed it, I was able to retrieve my waypoints, etc.

What other programs are you referring to? If you're referring to their remark "Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the update of your BaseCamp installation," I can tell you first hand, this is a mistake on Garmin's part. Other than the system requirements for BaseCamp, no previous version of MapSource or BaseCamp is required.

Heretic
I have the Garmin Mapsource Topo U.S 2008. It is the detailed topo map. You have to purchase it. It is better than any map that comes factory installed on their GPS's

thanks for all your replies, it looks like I have alot to
study and sort through. The reason im trying to figure this
out is im trying to download the tracks from my dc-30 collars, and the only program i have is the disk that came
with my garmin astro (garmin, mapsource trip and way point
manager) so from what ive read so far i need to get a map
program.

thanks a bunch
