FX3 to FX5???

Thought about upgrading to a Firestorm, only to find out that FX3 owners are roped into getting a FX5 only (discontinued model) instead of the Firestorm which is similar to the FX5.

A very inflexible and questionable policy; here's the transcript of emails to Foxpro:

ME: I have a FX3, is the FX5 the only upgrade path available to me? Is the Firestorm the same as a FX5?

FOXPRO: The only upgrade available for the FX3 is to upgrade it to the FX5.

The Firestorm and the FX5 are very similar. They have the same amount of sounds, same volume and sound quality, and very similar remotes. The main difference is that the FX5 has four presets but doesn't have Foxbang while the Firestorm only has two presets but it does have Foxbang. Everything else is very, very similar in the two.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance!

ME: So any FX3 owner gets stuck upgrading to a model that you do not even carry as a standard product anymore... sounds like FX3 owners get stuck with the old inventory. Not happy about this and I am rapidly cooling on owning another Foxpro based on a stifling upgrade path. Seems to be a totally inflexible policy.

Foxpro: The FX3 and FX5 are both older models that we no longer manufacture, however we still support and will continue to support any existing users of either of these products. As I said, the FX5 is very similar to the Firestorm, with a slightly different remote control. If you like the Firestorm, you're going to like the FX5. That upgrade is still present so that we can still offer people to get into a better remote control without having to purchase a completely different model, costing more money for the user.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance!

Evidently, Foxpro thinks they are doing FX3 owners a favor by funneling them into paying for an FX5... FX3 owners should be allowed to upgrade to the Firestorm if the two products are so similar. I guess FX3 owner's don't need a unit with their touted FoxBang option (not that it's of major importance to me personally).

I just don't like the idea of upgrading for a $200 smack to OLD INVENTORY! Foxpro won't be calling in this coyote again unless this policy changes!

Sorry, but the policy does not sound that unresonable. If you don't need the foxbang upgrade to the FX5 and you get more presets.

Yeah they told me the same thing on my FX3.

They told me that the FX3 & FX5 were Identical except the FX5 had more internal storage & a Digital remote.

I suppose it would be nice to have a remote that you don't have to turn over to see what you want to play next. I doubt its worth $200 to do that though.

I have an FX5 that I have had for about 3-4 years now and it is a great call. FOXPRO is the best of the best in my opinion. Any company is going to discontinue older models and replace them with newer units. Like I said the FX5 is a great call but, if I were you I would probably put the FX3 for sale then add a little money to what you get from it and buy the firestorm. I am considering getting the firestorm myself and having my FX5 as a backup. Either way you choose I don't think you will be dissapointed.

pwsamiam,

What you have to realize that there is no way to upgrade the FX3 to a Firestorm. When we would upgrade the FX3 to the FX3, they used the same type of technology, and we could make modifications to the boards, and the FX5 remote would work with it. This is not possible with the Firestorm. The technology is completely different, which means that everything would have to get replaced.

Here's an option for you. Sell the FX3, and apply the money toward a new unit. You will actually be better in the long run anyway. You could get at least $300.00 for your FX3. The Firestorm sells for $419.95, which means you will only have about 120 bucks out of your pocket.
I apologize for any inconvenience.

CaninKilla,

The FX5 sounds are identical to the sounds that our on the Firestorm. The displays on the remotes are also the same. One advantage with the FX5 is 2 additional presets. However, with the Firestorm remote having FOXBANG, that makes it a better remote, in my opinion.

I don't believe that any company is OBLIGATED to provide an upgrade path for their products. The fact that they offer an upgrade to the FX3 is a bonus for FX3 owners and a feather in the company's cap to my way of thinking. FoxPro enjoys a reputation for supporting their products to the hilt, and this fact is well known and appreciated by predator hunters. I upgraded my FX3 to the FX5 a couple of years ago, and I am still very happy with it.

Really, you should just sell your fx3 if you only get $250 you still only have $170 to make up the difference, but you will probably be able to get $300 in the classified or really close to it.
This way , you basically get the upgrade to the fire storm for less than $200 !! Sound like a plan?

This is crazy...

I would like to see you take a used truck to a dealership and demand an upgrade to any vehicle you choose for the difference in "new retail" and see if they don't laugh you out of the room.

There are only a few companies that offer upgrade programs that I am aware of and FoxPro is one of them. If the upgrade path is not what you want to do then take advantage of the good resale and buy a new call.

Fox bang sounds like a cool feature, but do you really need it? I mean, how hard is it to program a KI-YI to a number you can remember (like 00 or 01) and hit a button?

I use an FX 3. I'd love to have a newer model with more bells and whistles, but I really doubt it's going to call in any more coyotes than an FX3. As for more memory, the FX3 has 32 or 33 sounds. I typically use about 5. I really couldn't imagine using all 33 in a given day.

Beyond that, I think Foxpro has been pretty accomodating to even offer upgrades. Most companies have planned obsolecence built into their business models to keep us buying their newer and better products.

I hear you though...I do kind of wish I could add Fox Bang to my FX3, but it's not a big enough reason for me to buy a newer caller.

My thoughts exactly!!

Mike,

I wasn't comparing the fx5 to firestorm. I was saying the fx5 and firestorm had better sounds and remote than fx3. An also what u said, selling the fx3 and applying that money towards firestorm would be a better route than upgrading the fx3 that pwsamiam has
