Glock 21 VS. 1911

The 1911 has three or four depending upon what "series" it is... just saying.

Let me start by saying that I was in no way a Glock fan prior to being forced to carry one at work. Since then I have been sold. But IMO this is not a brand, style, or concealment issue as much as it is a training issue.

The 1911 is a fine weapon, and think this has been proven over and over. However, in a life or death situation (which is the only situation you should present your firearm), fine motor skills are greatly compromised. The 1911 has to be made ready in one of two fashions. 1. Cocked and lock and the safety lever moved to the "fire" position or, 2. Cocked upon drawing.

Both actions require fine motor skill. This can be overcome by muscle memory with extensive training and mental preparedness, but IMO there VERY FEW persons willing or able to put forth the training effort to become proficient to this level. I don't want anyone who carries a 1911 to take this as a dig. I have a great deal of respect for the weapon and persons proficient in it's use, but I can not justify putting myself, or the majority of the people that I know in this group.

The Glock on the other hand is also a proven combat / defense weapon, but the reason it is so popular is that it is an effective and reliable "dummy" gun. It is considerably safer for the average shooter because of its built in safety mechanisms that do not require the need to utilize fine motor skills. Look at target, thrust weapon toward target or acquire sight picture, squeeze trigger to point of discharge, and repeat. Muscle memory for this simple process is much easier to gain because it does not require the small muscle movements of finding and manipulating the small safety lever. Simply shooting the gun in a combat frame of mind under similar distance and carry characteristics is enough to remain proficient.

Without knowing your background, and level of training, I would go with the Glock. If you train hard, have combat experience, or other factors that may dispute some of my points, then I'd say it's a matter of personal preference. Just my opinion based on my experience.

I own a glock 23 and a kimber custom II, I love my 1911 like a third son. But for concealed carry, you cant beat the simplicity of a glock. Draw, point, pull. Plus a higher round count. For concealed carry that my choice.

I beleive compact would be the G30, G36 is a sub-compact....

The G30 is a sub-compact .45 ACP that uses a 10 round magazine. The G36 is also a sub-compact "Slimline" .45 ACP that uses a single stack 6 round magazine.

it was the slimline, i didn't ask my buddy what model it was. he handed it to me and i popped off a few. even with my sausage fingers it was comfortable and controlable i was impressed. the pinky overhang wasn't the problem i thought it would be with a 45. i carry a service model xd 45 , but im rethinking my stance on sub compacts for carrying concealed.

If it ain't steel and blue, it ain't a gun! Now I've come off that just a bit, I can deal with stainless.

Lol

i have a charles daily 45 that shoots like a dream. that being said i have 2 glocks, a G20 and G27. the 36 is an awesome feeling weapon with a pierce finger extension(fellow sausage figer here). i dont care what you do you cant make a glock malfunction! i dont like the fact but it is a fact. i got rid of my baby eagle just cause i shot my glock more and it was just as comfortable. a nice piece of steel shaped into a 45 has a solid place in my safe or by my bedside, but...the glock is always out of sight, and that aint a bad thing.

OK, just a tiny little confession here. I don't say this to everyone, but I have a six month old Ruger LC9 that I sure have enjoyed carrying this summer.

I am a former Glock hater. I now own a G20, G23, G26, G27, and a G35. I also have a Series 80 Gold Cup 1911. I would pick the Glock in a heartbeat over a 1911. They just shoot like a dream.

Dont forget to check out the S&W M&P series of .45s .You may like the way they feel better than the Glock. And wit interchangable back straps and made in the USA.

The M&P series has a lot going for it. It's my pick of the tactical tupperware. I've probably logged around 10,000 rounds through a Glock G22. Shot another bunch of rounds through a G23, G17, and G19. BTW, all those rounds were gov't funded - yippee, free ammo!!!

I have a couple buds down at the club with XDm's and have shot them quite a bit too. In fact, I was pretty well set on the XDm until my hands wrapped around an M&P pistol. That set me to thinking, researching, and begging and borrowing a couple of M&P's. I like 'em - a lot. So much in fact that Saturday the wife and I were in my local gunshop and I mentioned the M&P and promptly got an M&P 9 Pro Series 5" shoved in my mitt. Something about the way that 5" slide looked and balanced reminded me of a Browning Hi-Power or an S&W M41. It left the store with me and Sunday afternoon found me pumping nearly 400 rounds through it in a series of drills. I like it, fits my hand great, sits low in the hand, thing shoots soft like .22 almost, good 4 lb. trigger (for the type), good reset, nicely accurate. Fun gun and could be quite useful.
