Grand Junction CO. and Pueblo CO.

Jason,
I'll get down there dog, don't you worry none. Since I won't be able to hunt this year in CO if I don't come back to Idaho to hunt I'll come down there if I can and go with ya.

Grand Junction is getting expensive, not to mention all the good country is getting holes drilled in it everywhere. I love the western slope, but if this is just a temporary job, go to pueblo. You'll wind up with more money in the end. The hunting in both places is very coparable. Junction/most of the westrern slope has always been a boom and bust town. Right now it is booming. At some point it will bust. Last time it went bust, most 2000 sq foot homes sold for under 25,000. The point is right now Junction is in the boom. Means living cost are high. Living in P Town might mean extra $$ for the Hunting. Also in Denver there will be a Cabelas, a Bass Pro, Sportsman Wharehouse, Gander MTN outlet, etc. The girls are typically better looking on that eastern side of the mountain.

If you are settling down to stay for a good length of time like 5 or more years, then Junction might be the place, especially if your buying a house.

Elks,
I am planning on staying for awhile and buying a house. I am however married so the girls is not a draw for me thanks though. Grand Junction has no large sporting goods stores in it?

I have to way in here...I am 56 miles to the south of Grand Junctionm in Montrose...Got a nice Mule deer buck last year, a cow elk the year before, it almost spitting distamce to Unit 61 the meca of bull elk hunting and one of the most coveted tags in the state....upland game is sparce if Pheasant is the "Upland Game" But...Blue Grouse are plentiful, and Chucker....well its Chucker hunting, and they are here.

The coyotes arew there, but around G.J. they have been called to, so come south to Montrose...there are a few that havn't heard the best of Johny Stewart...Come to G.J. and Furhunter and I will show you some spots.

I lived in Canon City...36 miles west of Pueblo....I would choose G.J. hands down

I vote for Grand Junction, I lived in denver area for 18 years, hunted and fished around Pueblo and got tired of all the people when ever I wanted to do something. I moved over to the Grand Junction area 14 years ago and have never wanted to go east sense. If you see 10 people when you go hunting or fishing it is crowded for here. Yes housing and gas is expensive here but everyting else is reasonably priced. We do have a sportsmans warehouse in town and several other good sporting goods stores here.

Yes the western slope is a boom/ bust area, but with a state job that cuts down on the instability. Yep good hunting south of Grand juntion, from montrose to ouray and on to and past the million dollar highway, if your going to hunt the ouray country, you better be 3/4's mountain goat. blue

Dave,
I love Idaho, I was born and raised in Southeast Idaho it is beautiful and a great place to be for sure. However, by anybodies account Colorado is the Mecha for and outdoor lover like me some of the best hunting and fishing in the country from anything from elk and deer clear to the yotes and bobs and montian kitties. The trout fishing in the state is fantastic from everything I have read and on the western portion of the State there are far fewer outdoorsmen out crowding up the area. It may be that there are just as many sportman but more area. But the long and short of it is almost twice the money, more and better hunting oppurtunities without having 4 million people in the same area and the # of trophy deer and elk to be had in Colorado is higher also. WHY WOULDN'T I MOVE?

I've also lived in Pueblo--20 yrs. for me, and i love it. Coyotes/pr. dogs are my main pursuit, but my big game hunting buddies live in Ft. Collins, so i'm usually hunting deer/elk archery up in the north part of the state. Antelope is a no contest for Pueblo really, and that's 1 of my favorite game to hunt/eat. Larry R.'s gotta be less than a mile from me--small internet world, that's for sure. Lotsa good coyote hunting around here, but many ranchers are flying them these days, shooting them out of planes late in the season, and that cuts #'s somewhat.

Just about anywhere in the state is a great place to live with hunting accessible, but GJ's so close to the mtns, if i had my choice it'd probably be there if i didn't have the private land locally that i do here now.

Good Luck sir.

Its funny...the folks I talk to here in Western Colorado...myself included talk about how crowded the hunt is...I had 2 BOZOs walk between me and a Tom that was comming in 2 months ago...never saw the bird again, but saw the two guys and 5 other hunters on my way back to the truck.

I hear Montana is the Sportsmans Dream...

I love Colorado, but I am headed to Wyoming to hunt this year and Montana Next year.

I know the $$ is more, but that cuts both ways...better pay = higher prices for everything.

If you move down...welcome...if you don't let me know where you land... I am always looking for some new place to hunt.

Good luck finding anything in Montana that pays well enough to live on. The cost of living in Colorado isn't as big an impact as the poor wages else where.

I've work all over the western Colo. and I don't want to bust your bubble but twenty dollars an hour is not no big money there. I no people work hard for a hell of a lot less but twenty dollas an hour is no big money there.
Sorry it's just the plane truth u'll have a lot more money in your pocket at the end of the month in Pueblo.
Good Luck To U

Well I know the cost of living is more there and I would have more in the pocket elsewhere. But There are lots of reason for me wanting to go to GJ. I have an uncle that lives there, it is 4 hours closer to home and with a small child that is a big thing if and when we drive back home. And last but not least it may cost more but there are far fewer people in Western CO than Eastern CO. All those things make it worth it to have a little tess dough in my pocket at the end of the month.

If it sounds like we are trying to encourage you to go someplace else...we are not. Just want to give you all the info.

You are welcome and look forward to calling in a few coyotes with you.

G.J. is a great community and they are really growing.

As far as Sporting Goods outlets...they have been mentioned, Sportsmans Warehouse, Gene Taylors, REI,
Garts oops I mean Sports Authority & the one that was missed is Jerry's OutDoors...not a chain, but well stocked.

Good luck with your decision...it sounds like you have done your homework, and I will save a hunting spot or two for you.
