Gruesome Hog kill

The hogs have been pretty active on my property this year. I saw my 8th hog of the season yesterday.

Grabbed my M77.mkII in 22-250, shooting Winchester JHP Varmint (4000fps) and stepped out on the deck.

From about 120 yards, seated, I took aim at it's head and squeezed off a round. It moved just a bit as I fired and the bullet actually took off it's nose and half of it's upper jaw and eyes, sending it frantically running in circles so fast I couldn't confidently take a second shot because I only had 1 round left in the rifle and I didn't wanna miss and have to open the safe for more ammo, leaving it to suffer for minutes.

So I set off running, like a friggin soldier attack an enemy position, carrying the rifle, racking up the next round, stopping every 20 yard to glass it, to see if I could get a clean shot to finish off this poor miserable creature, but it was still frantically running around so a offhand shot after running would still not be a clean kill until I got about 20 yards away from the hog.

At 20yards I took careful aim at it's centermass and squeezed off my last round.

22-250 4000fps JHP have a lot of energy, apparently. The bullet struck it in the chest as it was facing mostly towards me so most of the energy of the bullet went down into it's abdomen, splitting it clean in half and exploding internal organs over a 3' circle. It continued to flinch for about 10 more seconds, the organs on the ground pulsating, and finally, mercifully, expired.

That was my first really gruesome hog kill. Normally the first shot dispatches them from 120 yards and leaves a tiny hole in an instantly dead hog. I normally shoot prone from 120yds with a bipod, making a hog kill a piece of cake - but because my first shot missed the lethal target zone and I had to get close to finish it... Damn - I'm glad I dind't have my kid with me - it split open in an explosion of guts like some horror flick or video game - would have given the kid nightmares for weeks...

I walked back to the house, leaving the hog for the vultures, and sat down at the dinner table to eat. Spaghetti. Yum.

My wife said to me; "Why two shots?" and I explained the first didn't kill it outright and I used a second shot to be humane. She asked if it was dead now and I just laughed; "Holy CRAP is that thing dead now, and HOW!" She jokingly remarked that my "Groundhog Cafe for Vultures" is now open for business again.

"Yup," I said; "and today we're serving SUSHI." /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Well, at least you put him down. I've got stories I'll tell around the camp fire but I will not post them. No Sir. I saw a hog the other night driving down the road that went at least 250 pounds, all black and looked like a mean hog. There are a bunch of trappers here in NE Texas. I like to eat them.

You'd think a hog with out it's face would be a bit better looking.

Atleast it won't be destroying anymore habitat for the native animals. Them things can be down right destructive.

I logged 23 hogs this year off my deer lease in Texas this past year. You can't get rid of them, they are a pain in the xxx keep the small ones to eat and the rest make good bullet test mediums like PDogs /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I think he is talking about Ground Hogs not pigs.

not pigs.

I would have to agree that he means Groundhogs. I can't see a 22-250 with its little bullet killing a big feral hog shooting him in the front of his chest. Maybe I am wrong. I know I wouldn't try it. They are just to dang mean for me to be using that small of a round.

Most of the wild pigs taken in my neck of the woods are with 30's(30/30,308,30.06). There is a guy in my local shooting club that uses a 223. While I would recommend against that, he seems to do very well. I guess it would be the same as a HMR on a Coyote. A well-placed shot will do the trick. The smallest thing that I have used was a 7.62x39. It took two shots on that 200lb boar. I was looking for yotes at the time and couldn't pass up the opportunity. Happy hunting.

OK, I feel stupid now. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Hahahahaa, what was I thinking? I even looked at the state and thought "I did not know they have those pigs in Ohio!"

Perhaps he meant feral ground-hog? hahahahaa

Gee Wiz,

If you shot the face off a ground hog i would go back inside and eat breakfast.

I can't imagine the drama being nearly as intense with a frickin chuck!

Sorry, the way the story was told i didn't even consider a chuck.

I stabbed a 350 pounder to death once. I used a 4-1/2" american hunter cold steel. Hit him 7 times in the heart and was out before he could cut me. I've taken several with a .223. They aren't that hard to kill. The one I stuck was dead in less than 30 seconds. Kool.

There is a local High School kid that jumped from the back of a pickup and beat a 150# boar to death with a piece of pipe. He received a total of 20 stitches in two cuts for his efforts. Did I mention alcohol was involved?

I fell for it too. I thought that blowing a hog up like that was really something else. Of course blowing up a ground hog like that is to be expected. Great story though.

It's nice to know that going to High School in S.L.O. County still requires imagination to have fun. Party On! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Thats OK I thought he was talking about Hogs like big. I have never even seen a ground hog, but HOG means BIG, MEAN, UGLY and needs to be shot /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I shot a groundhog today and I hit him broadside with my 22-250 and I could barely see the entrance hole, but the exit was about the size of a softball...It blew all of his guts out...Pretty gruesome /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The kids name is Kevin Sommers. He played football for Atascadero High and is now living in Paso if I can remember right. Doesn't make for a pretty mount though. Darrin

I also have a Ruger M77 MKII in .22-250, but mine likes the Hornady 50 gr. VMax for the groundhogs, I've only had a few "explode" on me at around 125 yds.

I must say I thought HOG as in pig with that story. When I saw the pice below I had to go back and read the post again. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif It made more sence the second time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
