actually, no safe is fire proof, they are fire RESISTANT. fire resistant safes will tell you to what degree (f) they are provide protection, and for how long. they're usually good up to 1200 degrees (f), for 70-90 mins.

I would stay away from Sentry safes. I recently saw one, first hand, that was broken into. It took two burglars, with a crowbar, ten minutes to open it. It was a "fire-proof" model.

I believe that you get what you pay for. I don't put much stock in the "fire-proof" claims. I prefer to put more stock in the security end of the safe.

I personally own a Zanotti Safe, and I would buy another one in a heartbeat.

Well, I got a Sentry safe, if for nothing else Peace of Mind. If someone breaks in and prys open the safe, takes one of my registered firearms and commits a crime, I think Im less liable than when I used to just slide em under the Bed.. lol It just helps keep honest people Honest..,

im in the same boat.. im looking for a good fire resistant safe... my budget is around 1k. i just hate the fact that all the safes are stack safes.. where you have to take 10 guns out in order to get to one gun.. i like them all in a row or facing each other but i cant get by with just a 8-10 gun model.. sucks..

as for the fire protection. i was always told that a the heat of the fire in a concentrated area usually only lasted 15-20 minutes and then burned its way past more or less.. i know some of the better safe companies guarantee to protect your guns from fire or they will replace them... i dont remember if it was cannon or who made them. i just remember reading it somewhere..

im a firm believer though in the fact that you get what you pay for when it comes to protection... thats why im being patient and keeping my eyes open...

I just got a new one this last spring, A Browning Sterling series with the S&G lock, its 28 X 39 X 72"tall. Its a big safe, about 1100 pounds, not the top of the line model they make but a good one for the price I paid which was around 1200.00

One thing I have learned about safes, if it says it will hold 36 long guns, it will really hold about 18. I dont like jamin' my rifles and shotguns on top of each other like that. I would help if they offset the cutouts in the racks, instead of them being across from each other.

Stay away from Sportsman Steel AKA Pentagon safes they are not the most reputable people to deal with. I bought one and would never do business with them again.

I'm with GrouseSetter on this one. I've had two Zanottis, the first was replaced because some of the queens got together with some of the kings.
These are nice because when it comes time to move them you can just take them apart into 6 pieces.

I purchased a safe last year from Johnson Safe Company [Zionsville IN]. I had previously seen them at the Indy 1500 gun show several years back. Jeff builds these in his large metal shop in his back yard. I took the time to go to his shop to see first hand what they do as I wanted to see what I was buying. We did the order right there with a handshake. 12 weeks later he delivered and put it in my basement. I believe he can ship anywhere and would assume not sure he would deliver in a given area. My safe the JS-546 is 46x60x28 weights in at 850#. Has the easy out system with shelves, long gun capacity 52\26. Standard features: Internal hinges [the door will not come off] 1” locking bolts \ fully lined w/ 1 ½ plywood and carpet \ S&G locks, brass handle & Key lock dial \ ½” ceramic fire liner – rated at 2300 for 1 hour. JS model = 10 gage body w ¼” doors – BR model = 7 gage body w 3/8” door.

B..

I have two Browning safe and they are the best i have found but not the cheapest. You get what you pay for. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I really like my Cannon. If you put one rifle up and the next down they don't bump into each other and fit better. Mine's bolted to a cement floor and like another poster said it sure gives me piece of mind.

I have 2 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Homeland security safe company safe
What I liked about this company is they will do what you wont. They will let you design the in side .
pick and choose your options you wont . /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif they were cheaper for a custom built safe then getting
one out of cabelas /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

this is from rhino safes website about fire rating

5. What does "fire-rating" mean?
Safe manufacturers use fire ratings to give their customers an idea of how long they can expect their safe to last in a fire before its contents will be ruined. For example, if a safe's rating is 1200 degrees/45 minutes, the safe was exposed to temperatures up to 1200 degrees. After 45 minutes, the internal temperature of the safe reached a certain "failure" temperature. Most companies use 350 degrees as their "failture" temperature, because this is the temperature at which paper begins to darken.

I have Winchester safes made by Treadlock. No complaints here. The next safe will be a safe door going into a room, but this will be when the garage goes up.

Anybody store there safe in a unheated garage? What would be the con's of this? Im assuming moisture. No place in me current house for a safe.
