Has anyone ever shot and killed a coyote with a .22?

Yes. Target of opportunity-I use a .223 or bigger if I am hunting coyotes specifically. TTT

I hAVE killed alot more coyotes with a 22lr/22mag than I have with a centerfire. A good scope and a very well placed shot and they wont go a handfull of steps.
22lr/22mag ammo has come a long way i the last 15yrs.

Just saying.

If you were to really put some thought into it, I bet the 22lr has killed about as many deer as the 30-06 has. Just not during legal hunting times. Most of us " know of someone who can lay claim to this theory"
I have only killed two coyotes with a 22lr, both while hunting rabbits and just got lucky. Neither was worth bragging about, 50-60 yards.

I've killed one, driving to school one morning when I was a senior and had a coyote trot across the road and stop 30 feet out in the pasture, I grabbed my ruger 22/45 pistol and stopped, when I did he ran straight away and I took a [beeep] mary at him. Dropped in his tracks, I ran out and grabbed him and continued on to school. After school I looked him over, hit dead center in the back of the head. And I'm a horrible pistol shot.

I did it once, with a .22 magnum at about 75 yards - head shot. The coyote dropped instantly and barely twitched. I wasn't deliberately hunting coyotes with the rimfire. It was a just a target of opportunity that came my way.

When predator hunting, I always choose a centerfire, but if I were limited to a rimfire, I would use it without hesitation, but would be careful with the shots I would take.

Rimfires will definitely kill coyotes but they suffer from other issues. Namely recovery. You heart/lung a coyote with a .22lr and it's gonna die. It may be in a few yards and that's good. It may be in 100 and that's bad for you'll have very little if any blood trail to follow. Small hole and thick fur just doesn't allow much blood to reach the ground.

I really don't think a coyote is all that much tougher than a big coon and I've called and killed a mess of coon with a .22lr. But unless you CNS hit em they don't drop on the spot and neither will a coyote. Ya, you can take head shots but unless you're very patient and only take GREAT shots you'll wound as many as you drop.

But heck, try it especially if you're just starting. Odds are you aren't gonna get many if any shots at first (slow learning curve, real slow for some like me) and you can judge for yourself how it works after that.

I never have but a few of my buddies have got a few as targets of oppurtunity while rabbit hunting. They definately would'nt have found em if there was'nt any snow, and forget about it if you hit em a little to far back.

40 years ago, we had a cattle operation about a mile from a town. At that time, it seemed everyone had a German Shepherd, and let them run free. As uncontrolled canines cause MAJOR damage to livestock, my marksmanship skills soared. Around the house & corrals, we found a 22 LR to be quiet and effective to about 65 yards, with a solid heart/lung hit.

The very first coyote I ever saw, I killed with a vintage 10/22 ruger with a single cci mini mag, from a stepped off 70 paces. Of coarse I hit him ( a large male ) right between the eyes.. that was over 30 years ago when I HAD BETTER EYES and a lot more steady hands. Back in those times, that was just about all i hunted with.

i once killed a 1800 lb bull with a 22.he was about to be processed and must have known it because he jumped out of the corral.then we tried to round him up again and he let us know he was a lot bigger than us.well we thought we were safely on the other side of the fence, and the fence didnt stop him. he was running right at me and i started shooting.the first 2 rounds just made him mad but then i hit him right between the eyes and he dropped dead about 20 feet away from me.we thought it was like a cape buffalo in africa charge.we also had plenty of hamburger that year. thats my 22 story, hope you liked it!
