Hi Point Carbine 9mm

So my oldest kid is about to turn 17. He drifted away from shooting at around age 12 or 13. This past year he got the urge to shoot again and we've been going out as much as possible.

He said that he would like the High Point Carbine for his bday present. He is paying for 1/3 of it so I'm sure he doesn't want to waste his $ on junk and I feel the same way.
Reviews I've seen are hit or miss.

So is the Hi Point carbine worth the couple hundred that I can pick up a new one for???
If so what do you suggest, 9mm, 40s&w, 45? I know 9mm ammo is cheaper but does this gun prefer a specific caliber over another?

Thanks in advance

I have one and it runs like a top and is surprisingly accurate. Also, Hi Point has an amazingly fool-proof warranty backing them. My 9mm Carbine is easily one of my most "fun" guns.

I haven't got to play with the hipoint carbine, but I do own the cz scorpion carbine and LOVE it! But a grand probably isn't in the budget.

My brother had one in 9mm and it shot good and it never jammed or anything to my knowledge. I can't even say anything bad about the pistols from my limited experience with them. Except they're ugly or whatever but every Hi-Point I've been around shot every time.

For your stated purpose, it's worth it. I've owned 2 9mm, sold them without ever firing them. I
I currently own a 45, haven't fired it yet.

The 9s I got a good deal on and picked up solely for resale, the 45 because I wanta suppressed 45 carbine. No real purpose to it so I'm not in a hurry to actually get the project done.

But the fan base is quite rabid in their support. They reportedly are as reliable as they need to be. If you spend some time on gunbroker they can be pretty cheap. It did take me several months to get the 45 for what I wanted to pay, but no hurry for me so I got one for about $200. If you go with the old "planet of the apes" style you can get a really good deal. Theres almost no mechanical difference in the 2 and you can swap a new style stock later with no issues.

Bahaha. That’s perfect..

My friend has one in .40 and it shoots very good for what it is. Every time we go to the range he takes it and rings the steel plates at 300yds with it. The 10mm is out now as well.

Huh, last time I paid attention to them the 10mm option was a non-starter for the manufacturer. [beeep] it took years of crying from their customers to get the 45. I wonder what changed their minds. Now I have to trade my 45 in on a 10 and go pig hunting.

ive got one, and they're a bunch of fun to shoot.

mine does have a minor fittment issue between the cheek rest and the stock that likes to pluck on my whiskers - its one of those just big enough to catch a hair type of things - but its minor inconvenience for the fun that can be had with it

A little permatex silicone in the seam would cure that.

I wanted a pistol caliber carbine, in 10mm, and was excited to see Hi-Point came out with one. But all of Hi-Point's carbines use Hi-Point 10 round mags, and that was a non-starter for me. I went with a JR Carbine, in 10mm, which uses Glock mags, and after I shot it the first time, I looked at my oldest son and said, "This is going to cost me a bunch of 10mm ammo". He laughed, and said, "Long hours at the loading bench?". They are a ton of fun, and pretty accurate for a short stubby bullet launcher. Mine breaks down, and fits in a small sling pack. My new "truck gun", which goes well with my 10mm Glocks.

I really don't know why they haven't gone with a double stack yet, pretty much in demand by 100% of its customers.

There is a company that offers 20rd mags that reliably function in the 9mm and do not void the warranty. Obviously not double stack as the gun is not capable in stock trim. Redball magainzes.....shaped like boomerangs since they're essentially (2)-10 rounders stacked.

10 rounds is the max in the Communist state of Massachusetts so no problem there.

I may just buy my son the 9mm and maybe a 10mm for myself
