here is the story. I just got off the on ramp from dimond to minnesota. I was probably up to 45 to 50 mph. the moose just jumped on the road. I just remeber seing its forelegs in the lights and a outline. Boom! it flies up lands on the hood and rests on the windshield I hit the brakes it slid off onto minnesota. It was laying their doing its last gasps for air when a brand new avalanche hit it again while it was laying there. The avalanche did a 180 while it was high centered on the moose and skidding down the highway and was almost broadsided by a car. Well a couple minutes later I see the calf that was with it go across the road, got to the on ramp from minnisota to dimond, I watched a wrangler (I think) put its brakes on but Then I hear a thud. It whacked the calf. I was standing there in disbelief. Sh!t happened fast and in large quantities. Ill post pics of the blazer tommorow hopefully. I think you guys will be suprised with the amount of damage. So anyway, I wasnt speeding or not paying attension. It was dark, rainy and black objects against a black background dont show up well. Plus With the amount of traffic that moose mustve jumped right in front of me. I have had probably 3 close calls also in addition to this confirmed kill on minnisota this year as far as moose are concerned. I saw 3 nice bulls in the area as well this summer for quite awhile. Time for a bow season I think. Anyway my 86 k5 blazer is pretty bashed up. front clip, radiator hood and windshield are a total loss.(glad I wasnt in the ford focus, Id probably be in the hospital.) I havnt seen the any other damage cause the police had it hauled off and I just went to work. Ill see it tommorow. anyway, these stupid things will catch you by suprise!

Well the good news is I saved on my car insurance by switching to Geico!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

yeah Im fine. back and neck is sore. I had full coverage on the corn kernal. I would have got my whole loan paid off plus 1500 bucks towards next car. Theres always tommorow....

Glad to hear you're okay.

After all these years of commuting through the Palmer Hay Flats, and just driving around the state, I've never hit a moose (listen for the sound of knuckles on the desk). But I've certainly had more close calls than I can remember.

It happens. Too bad you can't put some of it in your freezer. Hopefully somebody will get some burger.

If I new that was you I would of stopped and said hi. I seen you guys all narled up. I was doing a transport of machinery. I work in anch. yuk!

Glad to hear you are ok.

Glad you're ok Rimfire! Take care of that sore neck etc. for a few days. With no snow it is black out in the rain and moose eyes don't shine. Hope your insurance company covers everything for you... Take care! Glen

Lucky to be alive Rimfire!Last weekend there were 3 moose/vehicle collisions within a 50 mile radius of here.Dad seen aftermath of one accident, car was destroyed and elderly couple hospitalized.A semi hit one and a young fella on a motorcycle hit one and was killed,so be thankful if all you lost was truck.Bummer to smash up yer wheels but better than takin' out a moose at the knees and having the torso in the front seat with you.Hope you stick it to the greedy insurance bastards and get a nicer truck."OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.....my neck. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif "I don't think I could possibly work til after deer season..ow ow ow.Grinr /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Grinr brings up a good point:

After tearing up the woods looking for moose in September, it would be absolutely horrible to be killed by hitting one on the highway afterwards.

Look at the good side....

Matt what a bummer. How did I miss this post. MMMM must have been out of town when this happen. Lucky you lived moose are a big critter to hit with any thing. There are alot of moose in the greater Anch bowl.
