My friend Don has just recently got permission to hunt an area about 20 min. from Redding. So last night he asked if I wanted to go do some calling with my old Spitfire on some new hunting ground.......Well of course I did.
Made 3 stands in the early morning and had Coyotes howling all around us but none came to the call.
On 4th set we were set up on the edge of a open field with a drainage off to the East of us.
Don set up about 25 yards to my right covering the East and I was covering the West.
When he starts the caller about 30 or less seconds into the stand I see a Coyote standing between a bush off to my right about 100 yards out looking right at the Mojo and I was directly in line of sight so although I could get a shot I think Coyote woulda pegged me so I sit still and the Coyote moves in to the brush heading towards Don.
So I keep looking in Dons direction for the Coyote to appear and thats when I see Coyote #2 coming from behind Don to his right.
Now I'm trying to get Don's attn cause he's looking out into the field. When he shuts the caller off I get his attn and try giving him hand signals to get him to look to his right and he's sitting over there nodding his head and probably wondering whats wrong with me. Then the Coyote stops not 30 yards from Don and is standing there staring at the Mojo for at least 20 seconds before Don finally realizes what I was trying to tell him. He slowly looks to his right and there is the Coyote still looking at Mojo.
Coyote starts to move closer to Mojo and thats when Don moved his rifle and got lined up in em and then I bark and yote stops .........................BOOM,.....FLOP
then I see the 1st Coyote I saw jump and hit the trail for Oregon. I did all I could to get it to stop, It just wasn't having any of what the other got..
Don nailed this Coyote right between the eyes at 60 yards. You can see bullet entrance just in front of its eye.
We shoulda had 2 but 1 is ok I guess.
