Hitting a Dead horse...10/22

there is so much stuff for the 10/22 its hard to decide. I spent what you want to spend just on the barrel. after thinking it over for a long time I went with a majestic barrel, alum. with a steel insert, and a cheap hogue stock, both in od green. still have not done anything with the trigger, but need to as the pull is so hard, I think I still have the saftey on. but even with that, it shoots really great, even with the terrible trigger. and it shoots alot of ammo well, which I was looking for. anyhow good luck with your project, its fun.

The Ammo is one big factor with rimfires...some of mine love the cheaper stuff...3 out of 4 shoot the fiocchi super perf. very well,,,2 of em like blazer bulk.

The tool steel extractor would be my first mod,,due to the biggest prob with 10/22s is failure to extract/buildup.

Check you tube vids on working the trig on em.

Any question,,,pop me a PM.

If you have not already, check out rimfirecentral.com. I know I'm probably not supposed to mention other web sites but it reall is a good one. They have something like five forums dedicated to the 10/22.

Smokin

Go here and get the 16" GM stainless fluted- $121

Then go here and get a Promag Archangel Target stock- $109

You can get the GM heavy taper barrels from shooters discount for around 75.00 and get the arch angel stock from Cabela's for 99.00. Hold on to your wallet because it won't stop there.

Optics Planet had free shipping on the stock. Not sure if equal still?

Cheaper than Dirt has it for $82

Smokin is saving enough to buy a trigger

Random thoughts......

Try as I might I still like a good ol' carbine or short rifle.

You can still shoot bug holes with a sporter barrel so unless you are wanting a bull for looks or some added forward weight to aid in offhand shooting you don't really NEED a bull barrel IMO. You can do some touch up on the barrel band so it doesn't make contact with a sporter barrel which generally helps in the accuracy dept.

I've had good luck with Green Mountain barrels. Factory barrels can also be set back and rechambered for mucho improvement too.

The factory stock can be modified (a little or a lot) so with your $200 budget I'd just stick with the factory furniture. Think sandpaper and Krylon. You can also sand/cut the forend to remove/relieve the barrel band area.

First thing on any 10/22 is trigger work. I prefer the Volquartzen target hammer and add an overtravel screw to the back of the trigger guard.

I'm actually going to a gun show (Iowa fairgrounds) today to try to sell off an old Marlin bolt action I redid with the hopes of putting the money towards a new 10/22 project. I'm gonna modify the factory wood, do the obvious trigger mods, gonna either go with a heavy taper or maybe a short, fluted bull (entirely for looks reasons), do some work on the bolt (not required but a little help) and add a few bells and whistles. Kinda going for a combo factory carbine - tacticool - long range rimfire look. An odd duck for sure.

For the record, went to the gunshow and traded the old Marlin/Glenfield 25, cheap scope and bipod for a 95% 1980 10/22. Forgot how nice these older carbines looked as compared to the current production ones. Think the only things I "might" do to it are the trigger, new bolt knob, extended mag release, handguard and a weaver rail for scope and/or holo sight. No barrel work, no bolt work. Figure it worked for me back in the 80's and 90's, should work just fine today.

Moral of the story: Don't feel like yo uhave to do a dang thing to it!

i agree with you CB, i went out and shot it Sunday to see if i really needed to do anything to it....and well it shot amazing...however i still feel like maybe the reason i want to do this is because i always have wanted a BB 10/22..maybe im being ridiculous

What kind of prices are you looking at for triggers? Ive looked into it a couple of times and seems a bit overwhelming with all of the selections.

Power Custom hammer and sear pack - $50 (huge difference from stock trigger)all the way up to Volquartsen hi-performance trigger kit for $120

Other mods to put on your list are:

Tactical Solutions extended mag release - $30
Tactical Solutions picatinny rail - $30
Volquartsen auto bolt release - $10
Extended bolt handle assy - $30
Boyds Laminate Evolution stock (dual comb for leftys)- $100

Now the barrels, don't kid yourself, the guys who do postal shoots and those kinds of competitions don't shoot ER Shaw, Green Mtn, Shooters Ridge etc.

Tactical Solutions X-Ring (so stinking light it's amazing)- $180
Kidd - $175
PWS Tension barrel - $220
Volquartsen - $220 up to almost $400

10/22 mods are worse than crack. Once you start, it's tough to stop.

If you want the best you have to thread the receiver and screw the barrel into it.
Also you need to bed the barrel for about 4" and free float the receiver.

If you want a nice hunting trigger, get that Power Custom hammer and sear pack with the setscrew tapped through the sear. You can adjust all the pre-travel out and have a real nice 2 1/2 to 3 pound crisp trigger. Keep all the original Ruger springs, they work great.

I have a Volquartsen hammer/sear set, too, and the Power Custom breaks just as nice, but there's no take-up.

Should be around $65 to $70 for that combo.

I have one that is so dang accurate... Put a 20" green mtn. fluted barrel on it. A drop in timney trigger, Boyds Blaster stock. Night force 2.5 to 10. can shoot off hand and hit thumb tacks @ 75yrds every shot. Am into it for around 2 grand. But boy is it sure a blast! Thing about 10/22's, they are just flat out fun! You can do all kinda stuff to them for really cheap. Actually the only thing original on mine is the reciever.
happy Shooting!
