Hitting a Dead horse...10/22

Funny thing about 10/22's is that I've seen some that don't have a SINGLE Ruger part on it. Talk about a ton of money in a 22lr platform.
 
Here is my budget build list. Yes even at $500 it is budget compared to some $3K-4K custom .22's.

$180 Used 10/22 near new
$95 GM 18" bull barrel
$72 Hogue OM Rubber stock
$15 Power Customs scope rail
$10 Weapons kraft hex bolt and bolt buffer
$60 Brimstone trigger job Tier 2 and bolt hold mod
$18 VQ mag release
$65 Ques bolt mods w, extractor
$32 RT bolt handle and guide rod
$17 Leupold 1" rings

$550 and still need to buy a scope.

I loved the 10/22 I had as a young man but when I started looking at getting one a couple years back I got blinded by the array of parts.

Came to the conclusion that I'd end up throwing away the gun piece by piece during the transition.

So I decided to forgo the effort and just bought the factory Target version. The only thing it "needs" is a trigger job. With standard Remington LR ammo (for some reason my rifle loves it over any Euro$ ammo) I can X ring a 50' rimfire target at 50 yards all day.

So heres an update...my bosses brother owed me a favor and had a Butler Creek 16" flutted barrel laying around and long story short its on my gun. I took factory stock and sanded out barrel channel for over two hours to get it to fit. I still have one little spot where its touching barrel but my hands were hurting so bad i couldn't continue. I took it out and shot it last Sunday and at around 30 yards i had a pretty good group with not a very good rest, id say around quarter size hole with CCI mini mags. The trigger definitely needs addressed now and i for sure need to shoot from a solid rest, but heres picture of what i have so far.

I still need to figure out if im going to use stock. Seems kind of flimsy right now, also i if i decide to use stock i need to figure out how to get rid of the area where the barrel ring was, it just looks goofy right now, thinking either sand it smooth or just cut it off right there and sand it to make it look round.
 
Couple ideas on the stock. On one of my 10/22's I actually cut off the barrel band area and re-profiled the tip. I did mine at a slight backward angle but I've seen it done about any way imaginable. It worked but IMO made the stock look short and stubby although more than acceptable with a short barrel. Another option I've seen is to sand the thicker area behind the band down so the forend matches they area of the barrel band. This makes for a slimmer longer stock.

After looking at your pic again it would be simple to make a new barrel band outta some strapping (copper, aluminum, etc). I always liked the looks of a carbine (10/22, M1, etc) with a barrel band and thought a bull barreled, banded carbine would look cool. If made right it wouldn't contact the barrel.

Ive thought about every possible scenario on it so far. Ive thought about sanding it down to match, and ive thought about just cutting that piece off, with no final decisions yet. Ive also thought about trying to figure out how to either pillar bed it, or just bed it all the way. The thought has crossed my mind to even just get a new stock. A lot of decisions to make.

Understood. But if you're just thinkin about a synthetic stock it ain't gonna hurt to play around with this one and slap some krylon on. It's not like these stocks are rare and expensive.

Exactly. I still like the look of the wood stock, thats why ive been wanting to make it work. I feel like im awfully close to making it work that i should just continue on. Anyone can buy a stock...if i can make this one "mine" then it will be cooler to me i guess.
 
Well some of my 10/22 money got blown...came across a deal i couldn't pass on....mint 1100 28 ga!! Ill get pics up soon, but for now the buy of parts has been put on temporary hold. As of now im still deciding what to do with stock, i think im just going to cut the end piece off where its uneven from barrel ring. Saw a picture of one done really nice and i liked it alot, so im going to give it a shot and see what happens.
 
Cut the piece off end of stock where barrel ring is the other night and sanded the endges round and its perfect. Now i just need to sand whole stock down and re stain it, and sand barrel channel out a little more. Still have about 3/8" of contact with barrel and end of stock. Not sure if its that big of deal though.
 
You can also do the Rimfire Central trigger job and get the pull down to about3-3.5#. Then tinker with your ammo. You will find something that it really likes. Mine both like Federal Auto Match. I shoot a lot of Federal bulk because it is cheap, I and hunt squirrel with Remington standard velocity hollow points.

About 3 years ago I bought a 10/22 beater for $100 and added an Alumalite barrel and Hogue stock in heavy barrel contour. I did the trigger job and now have a target rifle that is as light as the standard 10/22.
 
Here is a bad pic of mine. I did some remodeling to my base 10/22 back in the fall. I'm not finished but it does shoot pretty good so far. We will see when I get out to 50 yards or better. So far it really likes Wolf Match Target ammo. Got around a .25" group at 25 yards. It hates Federal match though. I cleaned the trigger up but it didnt really do much. 8lb. stock trigger is heck on groups. So a new hammer is on the list. I put a 20" fluted GM barrel and a Archangel stock on it.

By the time you buy the correct stones and stuff for the trigger job, its alot simpler jusy to buy the target hammer for $40. Doing it yourself is kinda tricky. If you take too much off, the gun will go off too easy and make it VERY unsafe. Trust me, there is a fine line between a sweet spot and full auto. If you mess it up, then you still have to buy a new hammer.
