Home Defense Shotgun Anyone?

The reason I would keep my pistol in a vertical position is for muzzle saftey. Unless there is a target, my muzzle has no business being horizontal. I dont have an empty house. I have a wife, a son and dogs and dont need a fatal accident. Just curious and maybe I do watch too much TV............Are you a LEO or have had military training that has taught you to hold the weapon close to your belly? Just wondering because I have read otherwise.....just curious, not trying to start a debate, all I want to do is learn. Thanks.

Tony

It's a LOT easier to continue a fight if you accidentally shoot yourself in the leg than if you accidentally shoot yourself in the head. TV makes bad habits.

Finger OFF the trigger and held around the navel is a safe position. It will naturally end up in a slightly muzzle down direction and with your finger OFF the trigger you're fine. By elevating the muzzle slightly and putting your finger ON the trigger it gives a natural point of aim for close range combat. That is if someone steps around the corner to kill you at 2 feet your average person can begin placing rounds onto target while they step back and take a better firing stance. If you ended up grappling for your life, the muzzle is more in their direction than yours.

However with a vertical (TV) hold, if someone steps around the corner, very easy for them to either secure your pistol pointed up so it's worthless, or place the muzzle against your chin, it's a naturally weak position and a weaker person than will have a natural advantage against a stronger person.

YES I have some experience in both. That`s just the way I was trained .I may not keep up with my training like I should ,but I do remember some things that were stressed to me.Like I said I may be wrong but my .02

Makes sence. I gave it a try when I got home last night (empty weapon of course) and the muzzle does angle down a tad. I will have to practice that hold and do some snap shooting at the range with that method. Thanks for the info.

Not that most people will have to, but if you ever have to clear something the size of a school it's a pretty comfy way to carry as well. And with a little practice you would be pretty surprised at how far out you can keep rounds on target without coming away from that position.

This is a bit off topic, but I think it illustrates the point about birdshot pretty well...

I was turkey hunting about 10 years ago and had yet to take a really big gobbler...Well I called one in and the moment of truth came when the bird was what turned out to be 18 paces away...The turkey had a 10 plus inch beard and I wanted it very bad...and the thought flashed in my mind..."Don't shoot at the head and risk missing, pop it right in the chest, it will ruin some meat, but you'll get the bird for sure..."

The turkey was facing me in full strut...I lined up on the chest and cut loose with a 12 gauge maximum 3 inch load of No. 5 copper plated shot...the impact tossed the turkey backward and actually caused it to roll over, but it jumped up and trotted off on wobbly legs....

I couldn't believe my eyes, but it ran into an isolated clump of brush, so I was still confident that I'd get it...My plan was to walk up to the brush and either find the bird dead or shoot it when it ran out the other side....Except it didn't run out...It flew out and glided at least a half mile down a canyon and across a rain swollen creek!....I can't believe that the bird didn't eventually die, however had the bird been an ax murderer in my kitchen, I would have been in deep shee-at-su!

Up until that point I didn't think there was much that was as lethal as a magnum turkey load at close range, but the results of that shot made me rethink....

If a hit like that didn't stop a 20 pound turkey, I wouldn't bet my life that it would stop a 200 pound drug crazed ex con......
