How do I measure Length of Pull?

I bought a Savage Mark II that I am going to turn into my boy's first rifle. He is almost 8 and loves to shoot, but it is difficult for him to shoot with the butt of my HMR stuck under his armpit. So, I was wondering about how to measure LOP, and what is the best way to cut the stock, and should I just trim the factory buttpad? What do you guys think about having the barrel shortened a couple inches? I can't wait to get out and shoot his new rifle with him, and he is sure chomping at the bit, too. But, I don't want to "youthanize" his rifle, and screw it up. So, I would appreciate any input.

With the stock against his shoulder and a good cheek weld, the trigger hand thumb should be app 3/4-1 inch from his nose.

To cut the stock, you will need a framing saw and a belt sander to do a good job.

I know how hard it is to cut the stock, but he does need to learn proper mounting in the beginning. Have you considered getting him a youth 22 to start with before cutting a full length gun?

Thanks for the reply Cajun.

I did consider a youth gun(Cricket, Cub, mini-bolt, etc.), but I found this Mark II "used"--looks new, and bought it for $115. Just didn't care for the Crickets, etc. Also, he is pretty tall and they were almost too short for him. He also has two older sisters who want to shoot, also. Therefore, I thought that this would be a better option. Also, for $115 it was marginally more expensive than a cricket. Oh, and it also has the accu-trigger, which he is used to from shooting my Savage 17 HMR. What about trimming the barrel?

Yes, cut it down too. this job should go to a smith. the stock can be done if you are handy with wood working. The cut and recrown should be done by a competent smith. 18-20 inches should be about right for a youth.

If I cut the barrel, can the front sight be reinstalled? I do have a scope to go on the rifle, but I want the open sights on the rifle as well.
