How much extra $$$$??

I was wondering how much extra money you all are making for skinning or fleshing your hides. Do most of you do it mainly for space considerations or for shipping purposes. I know the buyers here in Texas usually do not pay enough extra to really make it worth your time. Just wondering how much you all are getting paid for the skinning, fleshing, etc.

I'm wondering the same thing. I like the hunting part, could put up with the skinning part, but hate the fleshing and turning part. Is it worth it?

As far as I am concerned, it is not a matter of money. It is a matter of taking pride in your work and having a great finished product to show for your efforts.

There really isn't that much fleshing to be done on a fox or coyote. For me, it takes more time to deburr. As far as the money, it would vary from dealer to dealer. But on the average, I would say about 5 bucks each. This is the difference between skinned and finished. If you skin and have the equipment it is worth the little extra effort required. You also have the advantage of not being forced to sell after you thaw. If you don't like the price, just take them home and hang them up. If you froze your hides, this is not an option unless you own several freezers.

Me again,

I was only asking if it anyone was really making a significant amount of extra money skinning or not. I was not trying to say that people who do not skin have less pride in the hides. I have two large freezers and usually freeze all of my animals "on the cob" or whole because it does not pay enough extra here to do the skinning and extra work.

On coyotes in our area, you can usually double your money or better. Last year you could average $17 in the carcass and $34 to $40 skinned and streched. I started sending hides to the big action houses and have had good luck. Racoons I would say you should make another $5 to $7 bucks for finishing them. I also take pride in getting them to the finished product. It also pays better than watching TV at night.(All though the wife wasn't amused when she had a flea land on her cheek)

Whitetail maybe I can give yu some help. Last year I stretched and dried everything I caught for the first time ever. The year before a certain Texas Fur buyer whom I will not name lied to me and told me the fur market had crashed. I had around 150 grey fox thawed out, and over 100 coons along with 8 or 10 cats. I had sold to this individual for several years. HE said that this was his last trip through to buy and that no one else was even going to bother comin g out either. To make a long story short, I sold the fox for 3.00, the coons for 2.00 and the cats for 20.00. Last year I shipped to nafa. They are not perfect but I sold cats for up to 450.00, my greys averaged 17.50, and coons averaged over 18.00 and coyotes averaged 12.50. These local buyers are doubling their money at least. Putting up fox, cats and yotes is not a big deal. Coons will take a little work, but after you have done a few you can do them in 10 minutes or so. Get you some wood stretchers and go to work.

Cat wacker,

I know that we are probably talking about the same buyer from out west texas. I have always sold to him because there was never another buyer so i just had to take his word for it. On the sales of furs to these national fur houses I am not real familiar with how it works. Do you just ship the prepared hides to them and wait for the auction? Sounds like a lot better alternative than what we have here in West Texas with such a limited # of buyers. Anyones info on how to go about selling to these national buyers and when i should ship would be appreciated.
Thanks,
JR

txwitetail, I was nervous the first time I shipped to NAFA, but it was simple. You just call them and ask for shipping tags and some of their bags to mail your fur in(UPS or the post office). Fill out the tags with the needed info, throw it in the bag with your fur and wait for your check. They take 11% of what it sells for plus a $1 a piece to drum the long haired furs. I've shipped as little as a couple muskrats and coons and have always gotten paid. Sometimes it may take a few months depending on timing of the auctions and when your fur arrives but it's usually worth the wait. Good luck!

White-tail you got it. IF you are interested either call tara connors at1-800-872-3877 or Les Barnes who is the closest pick up agent to us at 785-945-3598. Les is in Kansas. Last year I drove up and delivered mine to him in Ark city, but he said he is going to run his route out to Liberal this year. You can ship them to him, but I had a pick up load and figures gas would be cheaper than shipping. If I have a bunch this year I will do the same. If you can get them to me, I would be happy to take them for you for a little gas money. They furnish shipping bags and tags. Just call Tara to set up an account. She is very helpfull.
