How NOT to use Tannerite!

3 lbs at 25 yards? WT??

A 32-year-old Walton County man didn’t break any laws Saturday when he shot his lawn mower filled with an explosive, but he did lose his leg below the knee, the sheriff’s office said.

About 3:50 p.m., David Presley of Monroe shot an old lawn mower loaded with three pounds of Tannerite, according to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office. The lawn mower exploded.

His neighbor, Lydiah Mays, was inside when it happened.

“I heard him scream and so I came downstairs and we were all like looking out the front window,” Mays told Channel 2 Action News Thursday.

Two of Presley’s friends had helped him to a vehicle and had driven him to the bottom of the driveway in the 2200 block of Emmett Doster Road by the time deputies arrived. He was picked up from there and flown to Grady Memorial Hospital. He was missing his left leg.

Had an idiot or two do something kind of similar. A local forum use to have a few people that would put on what we call a DBS (desert buffet shoot). People would bring out their class 3 weapons and food and make a day of it in the desert. The events grew and a few gun shops got involved. They would bring out their arsenals and people could shoot pretty much anything for the cost of ammo.
While having a cease fire for lunch, some idiots set up some tannerite way to close to the firing line. When the call to fire was given, the idiots set off the tannerite which blew rocks and debris everywhere. The rocks broke the rear window of an SUV and did some minor damage to vehicles and people.
Now there are no more DBS shoots.

I just wonder if the it was the cigarette smoke that got in his eye's that prevented him from reading the warning on the jar it comes in that says don't use this stuff close, or if it was a hold my beer moment?

Plant.One.. I had the same though when i read that. lol

It only takes the acts of a few idiots to get the government-lovers in an uproar screaming "Something must be done!!" ...and a little more liberty dies.

like tbone said - its got a clear warning on the label to not shoot the stuff up close. IIRC it says 100 yds + on the labels i recall reading when i used it.

one of my first experiments with the stuff was an old computer hutch/desk that i put a pound into and threw a 55gr vmax through. the top of that hutch went 30' in the air or more and came 50 yds towards us before it landed. we were about 85-90 yds out when i shot that one.

we did a 2lb'er under an old fiberglass well bladder and blew that thing over the treeline. scared the [beeep] out of the neighbor - he had heard us shooting and thought we had an accident and blew the propane tank by the house

at least he drove down to check on us before calling 911 or something heh!

Tannerite will be outlawed in the near future. The ban will be called for in the sake of public safety, terrorist and whatever.

Tannerite doesn't start fires but the knock off stuff has ingredients that will.
Not knowing the difference has caused fires destroying millions in property locally.
Vehicles coming from the local military base have been identified but it has been tough prosecuting because the evidence is gone.
Now there are seasonal closure and it is still happening. More strikes to fuel a ban.

Tannerite will cause a fire. Sorry, but the very definition of an explosion in this case with this material is the fast combustion of the materials.

I do agree with you that usually it blows it's self out with the rapid expansion, but the heat isn't usually enough to complete the fire triangle.

I have heard of a couple of dumb Marines.. (i know lol) that put 10#'s of it in an ammo can, then closed it and of course duct taped it to an old water heater. Then placed that mess in a dry lake bed in the middle of a nasty mess of Cockle-burs. At just over 200yrds, and laying on the lee side of a bank, shot the mess. In an instant, there was no water heater, parts of it were flying really high into the air, and the ground was a perfect crop circle of about 30' of no more cockle-burs. When everything had come back to earth.. There was a small pile of foam around the ring, a few metal parts, and a hill side of burs everywhere.

It has also been said that anything more than about 10#s doesn't really utilize it to it's full potential. (diminishing return)

Ya, it's gonna get banned sooner than later. Better stock up.

The website also says that some of the knock off products can cause a fire because of the different components that are used in the knock-off products.

watch it in slow motion. Or any other Explosive.

One ingredient we are aware of and is obvious is the fertilizer.
The other powder that is mixed as the other part of the 2 part binary explosive is aluminum flake, dark aluminum flake, and a few others (mostly the simular components of model rocket engines)

Fire needs three things (that is why it's called a stool) Air, heat, and fuel. The air is mostly used up in that specific area at that moment, but if morons set it off in dead dry grass, the heat of the explosion with the air still there will support the start of a fire. Especially if some moron blows up a lawn mower with a gas tank in it.

stopped at the 3 second mark there is a bright fire ball.

But, hey some guys on the internet selling something you can't buy normally for safety reasons, said that it won't start a fire to set off an explosive. Go with that.

I have personally bought Tannerite from one of the licensed pyrotechnicians that make the targets. He used to be one of my customers at the ATV and Motorcycle shop I worked at. Both him, and Daniel Tanner, who created Tannerite, will tell you that it can not and will not start a fire.

It is the other, imitation products out there, along with irresponsible individuals, that are giving binary targets a bad rap.

Go with that. and you argue this by showing a video that unknown person posted on the internet, saying that "Tannerite" will cause fire. Now there's some funny logic.
I think I'll go with the maker of said product who probably has a whole lot of testing to back up their claim. They'd be fools not to have factual info. before selling said product.

the way i understand tannerite - and the other binary products that only use prilled ammonium nitrate and aluminum powder anyway - have no risk of fire because of their rapid consumption of oxygen in the blast area.

used according to directions the risk for fire is essentially non-existent. you cant start a fire without oxygen. this is physics.

mixed with other accelerants - lets say.. oh... a container of gasoline or other liquid motor fuel - and you're changing the reaction that sets off the explosion. therefore its not the same product anymore.

i think TTAG coveres the fire thing a lot more eloquently than i can

Quote:Factors Affecting Target Performance

The major factors affecting binary exploding rifle target performance include the purity of the components, the particle size of the components, the ratio of oxidizer to catalyst, and the uniformity of the mixed composition – Tannerite® brand target formulation is precise in all instances. Changes in any of the aforementioned factors will affect the chemical pathway taken during detonation which can result in fires, increased energy required for detonation, and sound amplitude variations. In addition, the stability of the mixed composition could be compromised. A properly formulated and mixed binary rifle target will provide a loud report; will consistently detonate on bullet impact; will not start fires; and will be safe to handle. The use of impure ammonium nitrate or aluminum, wide variability in ammonium nitrate and aluminum particle sizes, the wrong ratio of aluminum to ammonium nitrate, and poor mixing can lead to targets that may start fires, may be less safe to handle, and have erratic performance. Again, the Tannerite® brand target formulation is precise.
