Slot, I think he was talking to the OP. Dolan Springs is nowhere near Tucson. And yes, a hunting license is required here for coyotes.

Actually, I'd trade 105 in dry Arizona for our 90 with 80% humidity!

If Weston and your times does not work out, give me a shout! I may be able to get off work at noon one day, off at 3 every day, and if you are here either weekend, I'm up, for as long as you can stand the heat! It was hot July 4th and called this female in. Bring a camera!

Send me a PM if you would like.

The last year that I lived in Az, I shot 55 in the month of August. Pups are dumb, till Dove season starts, hunt hard!

I killed them when it was 105*, mid-day.

Look for areas that have water, watering holes, or a canal that they can get a drink out of. Most of the fields that irrigate have a section that has a water run off. When you find a farm that has busted Irrigation ditches that allow large pools of run off, don't forget those farms, coyotes will usually be within a mile of water that time of year.

Any of the large farms that irrigate will have a massive population of gophers. When they irrigate, the coyotes will run the rows for easy pickings on gophers as the gophers try to keep from drowning...kill'em and leave them lay...buzzards, hawks, and Crows will really appreciate you leaving them something to eat. The next day, go back and get the crows.

You need a rifle that will shoot 400 yards, I shot a 22/250 AI with a 55g NOsler Ballistic Tip at a little over 4000 fps to hunt yotes in the fields.

The dry river beds usually have a higher water table than the rest of the dessert, which will support growth. More plants = more rabbits = more predators. Scout and check the river beds for tracks.

The last week of July and the month of August was always some of my better hunts.

Back when we could hunt the Papago Indian Reservation, we would kill 100+ in August alone. Sounds like a lot, but it is not. Guys that hunted there will rarely if ever talk about what they killed on the Papago...eh, Billy the Kid?
I can remember Billy the Kid breaking his front Axle on his Ford truck hunting there chasing yotes.

Not trying to bust anyone's horns but I started hunting coyotes in my late teens (1963 ) in southern Arizona and the Papago Indaian resveration now called Tohono O'odham Indian reservation has never allowed hunting on the Reservation so I guess you guys would be called OLDTIMERS!
It would be nice if they would open the Reservation up to hunting as it would give us younger guys lol! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif a chance to experience it as you did.

Bird dog 3, back in the early 60s they did let a few predator callers on the reservation. They ended up being famous because of all the animals they took.
Delroy Western and his partner, Sam Dudley along with a few others could hunt that reservation back then.
Gerry Blair some years back was allowed to call coyotes on the reservation and in a day and a half counted 42, not hard to do down there. I hope nobody try's it now, you well go to jail.
1963 huh lol. I just got out of the Army, was 21 when I started back 64, man that was a long time ago. All I have left now are great memories, thanks God.........Good hunting to ya.

You are right Billy, it was a long time ago and if my memory serves me right I was shown a home movie clip on how to call coyotes that Sam Dudley had put together and I was told that it was shot on the reservation I even probably bumped into you once or twice on the AZ & California hunts. California let me take home some hardware in 1970 and I am not sure if anyone else from AZ. was ever given that opportunity before or after. Just don't remember you as you Californians out numbered us at least 20 to one.
Good to see you are back on the boards and take care of your self!
