HUNTING BY SNOWMOBILE

Any one out there use a sled to get to there stands??

Most of the sign ive seen has only been accesible by sled.

The problem that i have with using the sled is (1) the noise getting to my spots. and second the smell.. 2 cycles smoke like the devil and are really smelly. i usually can smell the smike on my clothes when i get home!!

I have strongly considered buying a 4 stroke sled for that very reason.

i typically watch the wind.. now the other thing im wondering is it the smell of the sleds or human smell that will turn a coyote off.

there is sooo much snowmobile activity in the area that im wondering if it is something that they are just used to smelling it.

i use a scent lock suit, but am wondering if its even worth it if i get the sled smell all over me???

is there anyone out there who can give some advise or experineces similar problems??

without a sled most of my stands would be inaccesible!!

My experience has been, animals that live in a snowmobile use area are not that scared of snowmobiles or the smell they make, I see tons of animal tracks running down the middle of snowmobile trails all the time. I would try it and see I think they would deffinatly be more scared of human scent that that of the sweet smell of a two stroke.

I know that the critters will use the trails because they are the path of least reistence. I always t hought that these trails are used primarily at night however when sled traffic is at a minimal.

I guess i will not be that concerned about the smell.. however there are area that i go to that snowmachines dont frequent... back country.

these area have had tons of sign yet my calling attemptgs have been fruitless.

I bring snowshoes with me.. however that it in itself can be a hell of a way to get to your spot when its a mile in there for 1 20 min stand.

anyway.. ill keep trying ... better than sitgting at home like the majority of the couch patatoes in this area.

I don't have much faith in a snowmobile I always called them the greatest piece of exercise equipment ever invented because where ever you go you always seem to walk back. but then I guess the new ones are better. the alternative is this

then when you are looking the country side over for coyotes and the road turns you get this /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

In Montana its leagle to chase down a coyote and kill it from your snowmobile. and thousands are killed every year, so coyotes get pretty scared of snowmobiles but the machines they have now are very fast and if they see a coyote they generally get it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Howler... nice!!!!!

We are not "allowed" to "harass" any animal from the back of a sled here. sounds like fun though!!

I have freinds in both bosman and missula ... i have got to get out there and see them.. looks like awsome country!!

I just got the patrol car stuck last night in almost the same fashion as your truck.. except we were "looking" (not chasing mind you) at a red.

Bad part is i was with the sgt. ... not impressed.. needed a wrecker /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Any way good luck!!

I use a sno go alot for calling. Works just fine. Yes its noisy but when I stop I sit to let things quiet down. I also carry a white sheet to cover it with. Wolves seem to be the ones most affected by the presence of a machine rather it be a sno go or truck. Fox, coyote & lynx don't.

Mine is just an old single stroke tundra set up for travelling the back country. Get a utility or trail machine with either a long or wide track. Speed machines don't do real well off established trails when venturing out to call or hunt.

Does anyone know if it is legal to carry a firearm on a snowmobile in Saskatchewan? My father used to do that in the 60's when hunting coyotes but I am not sure about today.

I am pretty sure it is legal to carry one on a sled encased and empty[in the south anyway, norht has different rules for vehicles] I know for a fact down here you will ahbve no luck within 1 mile of a sled, just like montana the coyotes are massecured by sleds and .22,last winter I knwo of lots of people who got over 100 coyotes becouse of the snow, other years hardly any, bunch of bull!! really made the huntign hard for thsi year, lack of coyotes and any adults are so scared, and to top it all off all the nice white thick shorthaired bueties are killed off and the thicker courser bush coyotes ahve taken over the farmland I usually hunt and was killed off by machines last winter,it just makes me sick when a person runs them down, I knwo of a guy who was on a snow derby and killed 11 coyotes one afternoon with a bat, liberal goverment has no money for wardens so the poaching and illegal activitys are going crazy, talkto the warden that is down from the city 100 miles away once a week and he askes do you have proof?? well its not my job!! Really ticks me off when stuff liek this goes on, I spend hundreds of hours a year walking hundreds of miles and these supposid hunters screw it up for all, hunt right or leave it alone!!!
I guess to anser your question LOL, down here in the farmland a coyote will not coem even close to a area a snowmobile was around couse they get chased all the time, if not killed peopel do it for the fun,Iknow a guy who trapped from snowmobile and he says coyotes are up and runnign when they are just small dots over a mile away when he is on the machine!!
