Hunting with a Stool

How many of you guys hunt with a chair or a stool?

I have a couple of camping chairs that are brown and would blend in perfetly and wondered if they would work. I am thinking that a good solid back rest would help me be more stable. Also I would sit up higher and be able to see more.

But at the same time If I can see better I can be seen better also. I wonder also how limited I might be trying to turn at different angles to get shots.

I just want some opinion from guys who have used them, and guys who haven't what your reason are. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I use one of thse also in the winter. I just wonder if they are better or worse to have on stand. But the seats are nice in the winter aren't they?

I use a stool, camo material with a storage pouch underneath. Lightweight easy to carry with a strap.

I'm leaning forward with the shotgun at the ready so having one with a back support would be useless for me..

They do get you up off the ground a couple feet, would not see what I do now if I was on the ground.

We use a turkey hunting chair. They are really light and are great for keeping you from sinking in the snow.I think mine is about 6" tall.

I don't or won't use either. Not only is one more thing to carry but, for me and the way I hunt it's completely unnecessary. All I have is a butt pad strapped to my belt so keep the cacti out of hard to reach places.

I think DogBoy has used his Granpa chair quite a bit, he'll have some insight into why someone would use a noisy lawn chair for hunting. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Since I've had heart problems I often take a folding chair. Your right about it being bad about shots not directly in front of you. Another problem is that movement is a a big contributor to being busted and just getting the rifle up to shoulder level often can get you enough attention to make a coyote that's coming in swap ends. I've been thinking about getting one of these rigs. They swivel and have a rest that keeps the rifle up.

Here's another rifle rest that works with a folding chair I found. It might be better for working ground squirrel fields though.

I usually use a turkey vest with a built in seat and try to snuggle up to some brush or a tree with the rifle on a bipod. But after the last heart attack it's getting harder and harder for me to get up off the ground.

This is my normal setup.

I sure like the way a folding chair gets you up above the grass and the swivel on this NRA shooting rest sure is appealing. I'm hoping to get up to the new Cabela's at Post Falls ID in the next few weeks and take a look at one of them. Only thing I'm worried about is the feet look kinda small and at over 200 pounds I'm worried about them sinking into the ground.

yes sir

Last year, I started using a Hunter's Specialties Two-Way Strut Seat for predator calling. I can sit longer and stay more comfortable with this seat. But, the downside is that it's just another thing you have to pack around.

I always keep a dove stool in my truck and will use it often in certain terrain. If I can get up on the side of hill or get a bit of elevation I don't use it, but for flatter areas that couple of feet it gets you off the ground make a big difference in visability. Can't shoot what you can't see.

I almost always hunt from a stool and have tried several different types of chairs and stools and so far my favorite is basically the green chair on the right. Its light, folds up and throws over your shoulder easily. Arms or backs on the chairs inhibit you from moving incase they come from an unexpected direction. Leaning forward with your elbows on your knees is pretty steady.

I use a small folding stool with a strap that goes over your shoulder. I started using these when I hunted off the ground in Az. I take a set of pruning shears (Stil brand available at any Lawnmower shop) that I wear in a leather sheath on my belt. I carve a hole in a bush to break up my outline. They rarely if ever see me while I am sitting on the stool.

One thing that is really nice about the stool, is that it is easy to get up and swing around if you absolutely have to. Getting up off the ground is a [beeep], not to mention all the cactus, ants, or what ever you happen to sit in on the ground.

Lawn chair, LMAO, NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'll quite with the lawnchair if you carry more shells on the stand, so you don't have to dance with the dogs, when your out of ammo pal....... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I can't imagine NOT, using a stool? I use the dove hunters stool, sold by wally world every sept. tubular rounded legs, so nothing pokes in the ground and tips you over, and very light weight. A stool raises your visibility horizon by a good three feet, which can make a hell of a difference in certain terrain. The only time I will sit the ground, is the rare occasion I have a bit of elevation on the call, which is not very often.
A stool allows you more comfort, to gain a few extra minutes on stand. About the time a ground sitter is fidgity and ready to move, a stool allows you an easy 5-10 minutes of stand time, which is a good thing. If your jumping up and leaving after 10 to 12 minutes, your missing coyotes, you would have seen if you were comfortable and stayed another 5-10 minutes. A stool is a good thing, everyone ought to have one in the arsenal.

I use one of those lids that goes on a 5 gal. bucket that also has a padded seat on it that rotates 360 degrees. Its not to bad cause you can also use the bucket for carrying your caller or decoy or whatever else you might have to carry to the stand.

LOL CWeeks, he hates me cause I hunt during the week while he's yelling at young Marines....... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I personally use a Turkey vest with a pad attached to it and the vest has plenty of pockets for your calls and you can put a decoy in the game pouch area as well. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

besides maybe a ladder?? using a stool and a light wt 3 sided blind is the deadlest combo going. i use 6x6x10x10 wire mesh, like you put in a conrete slab. i cut 3 pieces, the one on each side is just high enough when i sit on the stool that the tippy top of my camo hat can be seen, but not my face. the two sides are 45 inches high x 24 inches long, and the front piece is 24 inches wide x what ever ht you are when your sitting down with your gun sitting level. it weighs exactly 6.2 lbs. accross the front use a piece of foam pipe insulation and put it on top of the wire mesh, tape it or zip tie it on. then get a piece of burlap and cover the 3 pieces using some wire or hog rings, then hog ring the 3 seperate pieces together so they fold up. spray the burlap camo. don't use camo material to cover the wire if it has holes in it unless the holes are small, cause a dog can see you insde moving. the front piece with the foam which is now covered becomes a virtual bench rest when you sitting there on a stool.back up to a bush for a background. you can cut a 6inch x 6 inch hole in the two sides so you can see the dogs comming, even stick you shot gun out the holes and shoot em.here's the bottom line. you take a stool with a strap on it, throw it over one shoulder, reach down with the other hand and pick up the blind that is folded flat, and grab a wire that is just the same length as your arm hanging down so you don't have to carry it with your arm bent. the dogs cannot see your movement from the sides at all, and you gun is resting right on the foam on the front piece. if you want , you can tie some of the brush your hunting in on the sides, that's even more deadly. the virtually run right up to the blind.and it cost abou $10 to make

I used to sit on the ground....didn't need no stinkin' stool or buttpad either for that matter.

Got tired of moving around on a stand cuz there was a pebble under my cheek poking me...figured I'd try one of those pansy buttpads. Went that way for a while. Still didn't need no stinkin' stool.

Got tired of having to wander around looking for a spot with enough clear space in front of me so I could see more than 15 feet...figured I'd try one of those "grandpa" chairs. Couldn't believe the difference it makes when calling on flat ground. The little bit of extra elevation translates into being able to see much further and getting (not to mention making) shots that I would never have gotten at ground level. I use one of the chairs that has a built in "cooler" under the seat. I put my caller, an extra mag. and shooting sticks in the "cooler", sling the chair over one shoulder and my rifle over the other and I'm ready to go.

Some people get smarter with age, some don't. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
