If you were to do it over

Knowing what you know now, and didn't have a coyote hunting rifle already, what would you buy or build?

Now this isn't a dream rifle that cost a years pay, or shoots magic golden bullets, but a real setup, including scope mounts and a scope, just for hunting coyotes, and the occasional bobcat or fox.

Not needing a moose, deer, or chucacabra rifle, just coyote, and the occasional bobcat and fox.

I am having a pretty hard time choosing between a 204 Ruger, 22-250 AI and a 243 for the cartridge.

The Sako A2 or L579 would be great for the two largers bullets, maybe a Stiller or other premium action to cover all three. Screw on a Lothar Walther, Shilen, Lilja, Pacnor SS barrel at 22-24" long.

Most likely a McMillan stock in the Rem hunter or Sako style. And a nice Leupold scope, If more money is available a upper end Ziess, or Swaro scope.

What would you all choose?

Predator hunting only in mind?

I'll probably never build a rifle as it's just not needed for what I do.

I'd go with something light in .223 or .243 caliber.

CZ527, or a Tikka T3.

I would still have my Model 7 in 243. Just put a new stock on it. I wouldn't have had the coyote special to start, just a regular duplex. That's it!

I did just that.

How about a Kimber Montana .223 with a Leupy 3.5-10 in some talley lightweight rings/bases. I think that the barrel is finished at 22". I really like the scaled down action for the smaller .223 based round.

I just think that I am going to have it Ceracoated to get rid of the shine.

I would stick with the Bushmaster Predator 5.56 like I currently have but put some nice glass on it.... Probably a 6x18 with a reddot of some sort piggy backed off the scope at the 2 o'clock position for closeup action..... I just think the AR15 platform is the Ultimate yote killer for fast follow up shots on multiple targets.... straight groundhogger I would pick a nice bolt just not sure of what caliber.....

If it is a calling rifle, 22_250 Ackley would be my only choice.

To each their own but I don't see where you need that extra oomph from an AI while calling. 90% of most called critters are shot under 200 yards. Regular 22-250 is more than adequate

Hey Gary, alot of guys that re-load go the AI route after they have burned out a barrel just for the added case life that an AI gives you.

I would have resarched a Little more about the Mini14. I would not have wasted the $$ spent on that. I do however like the rifles I use now, no customs just rifles that dont cost a fortune.

Oh come on. You can always say "That rifle made me become a better caller".

I hear ya Jay. Just seems like a waste to me. If I was popping ground hogs and pdogs way out there I understand but not for calling.
