I'm getting a custom AR!

Hello Mike, I think that your decision on the Jewel trigger is much more important than the freeking stock...so don't sweat the small stuff!

The darn trigger and the caliber that you have already gone with are 90% of the issues.

You just need to get out and kill some stuff!

If you were back here with me, I would have you shooting the heads off turtles in the River to get your confidence up.

I hear what your saying. However, I have always been a detail oriented person, and the little things really do make a big difference to me. I want to try to get it right the first time. I like being able to choose what I want, and I need to make the best choices from as much information as I can get.

I have decided to extend the barrel length to a 22 inch barrel, and I am going to stick with the 2-stage Jewel trigger. I will keep you guys up to date with the information as it progresses.
 
The main thing to remember, Mike, after all the 'dust' settles, does it satisfy you. For my 2cents I prefer 18-20 barrels, ACE stocks, and 2 stage triggers.

I do like the 20 inch barrels on a .223. I have the Bushmaster Predator now, and like it. I also had the Bushmaster Varminter with the 24 inch barrel, and it didn't bother me neither. Swinging the rifle on sticks was never too much of an obstacle. My main drive for switching to the 22 inch barrel on the .204 is to quiet it up a little.
 
I've shot the .204 through 14"(G2 Contender)20"(Ruger M77) and 24"(PK Industries Varmint upper) and can't really tell the difference when hunting as to the noise. I'm sure there is some, it's just that(along with recoil)in the 'moment'of the shot, I don't notice it. I prefer the shorter lengths and lighter barrels for the 'carrying' weight reduction.

Like I said, get what YOU want.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I am just now getting caught up after being gone last week (had some surgery for a hernia). I also prefer the lighter barrels over the bull barrels. I am not building a competition rifle, I am building a hunting rifle. At the same time, I want to protect my hearing as much as possible (I don't wear ear protection while hunting). I like the idea that I am very involved in the process.

I just got off of the phone with Dan Cheatham, and after talking with him, I decided to go with the Ace stock. So far, here is my rifle:

- Again, .204 caliber with a 22 inch barrel.
- Ace Stock
- Jewell 2 stage trigger


Now, I have to select the float tube! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif


Opinions?
 
The Hogue over-molded free float tube is very nice. I use them on any of my guns I use for hunting. They are quieter and much warmer to hang onto in cold weather.

Thanks for the tip. Are you able to get it dipped in camo? Or, can you at least remove the rubber so that the rest of it could be dipped?

Hogue now makes their overmolded forends with the rubber part available in TAN or OD color. The metal part itself remains black...

I tossed the idea around of dipping also but found that it will not stick well at all to the rubber part of a Hogue forend. And the overmolded forend is a MUST, IMHO, for a hunting rig.
That said, Mike is putting an OD carbine forend on an upper he's re-building for me...

Thanks for the information. Do you know if the rubber piece is removable from the rest of the forend? I would really like to get the gun dipped when it is complete.

I'll try to "wiggle" a screwdriver under the rubber grip on my Hogue when I get home.
As of right now though, my guess is NO, it can't be removed. Not without damaging the rubber at least...

Maybe the rubber part can simply be covered with masking tape or the like and the upper then dipped as a whole?

I didn't look that far into the process for feasability...

No need to do that. The dippers that I work with are very good, so I can only guess that they can come up with an easy solution for me if it is not removable. Don't worry about taking the screwdriver to your rifle.
 
Mike, I'm probably a little late on replying to your stock question, but I've decided to change out my A2 for a Magpul UBR (Utility Battle Rifle) from JTac Supply. It combines the function of a stationary stock, for a good cheek weld, with the versatility of an adjustable stock. It's also about the same weight or a little heavier than an A2, so it will balance better than a CAR stock. The stock itself is not out yet, but they are supposed to be in production this month. I preordered on from JTac Supply. I made the decision to change due to longer eye relief when hunting with heavy clothing.
 
Mike, Danny put a carbon fiber float tube on my AR. He is putting the same on the one he is building for my brother. Very light and there should be no problem with the camo job. Don

You'll also like that jewell trigger, very sweet.

Thanks for the heads up on that new stock. I think I am going to stick with the Ace for this gun, but may try something different when I build another. It does look like a nice stock.

I will also look into the carbon fiber float tubes. I do like the idea of the rubber, but I want to take a look at the others. And yes, I really do like the Jewell triggers. The AR's I have now all have them, and it's what I like.
