Iowa Mt. Lion pic

The pic and short story was sent to me by a fiend from Mercer , MO that got to see the Mt. Lion, that was shot in southern Iowa this week.

shot Jan.5. When shot, the lion was jumping from branch to branch in a cottonwood tree and had just eaten a deer. They said he weighs around 150 lbs. and was approximately 7 years old. The hunters were amazed at how agile he was when jumping from branch to branch. They were able to track him due to the snow on the ground now and was shot in southern Iowa somewhere between Clio and Promise City. They will be sending him to the taxidermy$$$$$$.

I should have checked the DNR site before I spoke. Gotta love that government logic, you can't hunt for bobcats, but go ahead and open fire on the mountain lions.???

What's wrong with this picture?

A dead cat appears to be "standing" up. I don't see how that could be unless he is frozen. Also, why would you take a picture and not have him facing the camera? Also his tail is standing straight out and his head is erect. This is either a mount (not killed jan. 5 of this year) or again its frozen whole. If it was frozen whole, This is not the pose I would expect it to be frozen in, unless they have one heck of a big freezer.

Something is fishy here.

Just about everything that could possibly be wrong is wrong. I know 8 year old kids that can put together a much better picture than that.

I can't quite figure out the creases in the back right behind the shoulders. Maybe cut and paste, but not of a live cat I don't think?

From the looks of it on a map were you say that cat was shot the only logical explanation would be that it came from Nebraska and traveled straight east on the Iowa/Missouri state line before coming to rest in Iowa. But dont ask the Game and Parks here in Nebraska because they would tell you that it was probablly just a coyote or a wild dog of some sort.

This might not be the pic, but it was confirmed that a mountain lion was killed around promise city last week or so. A local acctually told us they had seen the cat crossing a field with a deer in its mouth n called some local yote hunters with hounds, the dogs ran the cat up the tree and the hunters killed it. However the DNR biologist that studied this particualar cat said he only weights 100 pounds, and is only 1 1/2 to 2 year old male. So parts of the story are correct and some arent. There is a link on a iowa outdoors website to an article about this cat if i believe. I'll see what i can do about finding the article.

Mountain Lion Shot in Wayne County
From the Iowa DNR

A young male mountain lion was shot south of Confidence on the Chariton River in southern Iowa last Sunday after it was seen eating on a deer carcass.

“Someone saw the lion eating on a deer carcass and called a friend,” said Todd Gosselink, DNR wildlife biologist with the DNR. “The friends showed up with their coon hounds and flushed the cat from a culvert, chased it for about three-quarters of a mile before it climbed a large cottonwood tree.”

That was when Jason Klaiber shot it with his 30-06 rifle. Klaiber, of Lineville, hunted the mountain lion along with his father Gary.

The lion was about 6-1/2 feet long and all indications are it was wild. “It was a good sized male. I’d estimate it weighed 80 to 100 pounds and was probably 1-1/2 to 2 years old,” Gosselink said. That makes the third young male lion killed in Iowa.

Ron Andrews, the state furbearer biologist for the DNR, said he is hoping to collect the stomach, muscle tissue and some teeth in order to age the lion and to run some DNA tests.

“It certainly is exciting and maybe substantiates some of these reports we are receiving,” Andrews said. “The reports we get on mountain lions is almost overwhelming.”

Andrews said there must be a general increase in the movements of these animals into the state, but how many, he can’t say. There have been recent reports of a lion killed on the interstate north of Kansas City, one was captured in the Omaha area and one was killed near Ireton in northwest Iowa.

The DNR has six apparently good, solid mountain lion tracks in the state. The tracks were found in Webster County, near Mt. Ayr, near Cherokee, Lyon County, Harrison County and Decatur County.

“Killing mountain lions is currently not illegal, but we certainly don’t want to encourage the indiscriminate killing of these animals,” Andrews said.

The Iowa DNR has not released any mountain lions into the state

this is from an iowa website (i know we arent allowed to post other websites on here but i want to give them credit for the article atleast somewhat) and this artical can be found on the Iowa DNR website i believe if you think this was made up for some odd reason.

I don't doubt the story, but I doubt that this picture is of that lion for the above stated reasons.

But, I could be wrong, who knows?

Something might be tied around him, kinda looks like it's hanging below. My problem is that he apears to be levitating, and no sign of flash shadow.

I have four other pics of the mt. lion's head, teeth and paw, but only posted the one pic to show everyone. I have shot coyotes in the morning, put in the back of the truck and by that evening they are pretty stiff. I would say they had in the back of their truck, driving around on Iowa's coldest day of the year showing it to everyone. Shoot it was only like 10 above that day and got down to 12 below zero that night.

Of course, I'm no photo analysis expert, but I believe it is possible that photo is the real McCoy! Just a frozen stiff cougar posed inside for the photo.

How about this photo? Have any of you ever had a large, hungry coyote charging at you and no rifle or shotgun to stop the charge? Check this out---
