Is Sport Wharehouse going broke?

Sportsmans isn't owned by Bass Pro. I know for a 100% fact. I work at the one here in South Dakota. It's privately owned by Stu Uutgard. The chain started as a mom-pop shop out of Utah and has grown from that.

They're not going out of business either, we just can't get anything in stock. With the price of Copper through the roof the price of brass/bullets has gone through the roof and we can't keep anything in stock. Winchester is no longer producing 223 White box ammo which puts the hurt on other providers. Rumor has it Black Hills recently acquired a military contract so if you see any Black hills available grab it while you can as it's going to be in extremely short supply.

Check out the auctions on Ebay for 223 brass. It's astronomical what people are paying for it. The Assult rifle ban has scared alot of people and they appear to be stocking up. Rock river and many of the other big AR dealers have now bumped delivery dates out to nearly 120 days from the huge increase in orders they've been seeing.
 
Bass Pro shop here in Denver doesn't really do alot with reloading. Haven't since they opened. I was just at SW up north and they did have everything I needed at the time but alot of empty spaces for product.
 
I cant believe you guys complaining about 20.00 a pound powder or the cost of primers. Around here I have to drive 60 miles to get to the nearest store that even sells reloading supplies and thats with gas at over 3.00 a gallon. then IF I can find the powder I need i'm lucky to get it for under 30.00 bucks a pound. As for primers try 25-30 bucks a brick. If I want to go to a "regular" store like Bass Pro or Sportsmans Werehouse I either can go to Reno or Las Vegas both about 4 hours away. Ok I'm done ranting for now.

The SW in Riverdale Utah is as bad on fly tying materials as it is on reloading supplies. It makes me wonder. Get Cabelas new reloading catalog and get a good scare. Rifle powder $27.00 Etc.
 
Our Cabelas is a little weak on powders, primers, and equipment, but has a very good selection of brass and bullets. The Sportsmans across town is much better overall in the reloading area. I try to use Sportsmans as much as possible, they give a military discount. Only 5%, but it's something.
 
The Lacey Washington Store was loaded up for the opening. They too have a problem keeping stuff on the shelves. I am not just talking about powder and primers, try finding un primed brass. DVD's I don't think they have ever been restocked. I have been waiting for Randy A's calling III, Cableas has had it. I didn't want to have to order it I just wanted to drive up the road and buy.

Hidalgo, I wish we had that guy at this guy counter. If I could just get acknowledged with a "I'll be with in a moment" I would be happy. The best way I could get any information out of them was to call them on the phone. Lord help me if I actually wanted to fondle a weapon. They'll probable catch on to this and quite answering the phone. After all who wants to sell weapons anyway.

I know that seems hard, but after years of buying everything through Cabelas (used to live in AK and WA has not had any good places) I was looking forward to having someplace I could actually try suff on to see if it fits. Instead of ordering 3 pairs of boots and sending two back, 3 pairs of binos and sending two back, I had to do the same with other suff. Heck, I needed some primers and 44 mag brass the day before yesterday. No 44 mag brass on hand? Wow, you would think you would stock plenty of that kind of stuff. Paul
 

Hey, I just talked to James at the Lacey WA. Store. They are aware of the issue and they are working on it. He said they are going through distribution changes. I hope I have this right, instead of depending on vendors they are going to start running their own distribution out of a central location. Suppose, to be an improvement. Be patient. I too, like their prices and the military discount. Paul
 
The Sportsman Warehouse stores are hardly restocking anything since Christmas, including fly tying gear, reloading, shells, clothing etc.

Tried to get the manager to order me some stuff, he went to his computer and said we have plenty of the stuff you want in the main warehouse and distribution center but they wont turn loose of it for restocking or special orders.

Sportsman Warehouse feels this is the off season for pretty much everything. Any stock leftover in the stores after the first of the year gets taxed. It's not taxed if it is not distributed to the stores and left in the warehouse. After April 15th you will see the stores filled to the gills again.
 
This is correct. We used to get drop shipments of stuff from certain vendors but no more. All comes from the main distribution center.

FYI you can ask the stores near you when the shipment is supposed to come each week. Stop in the day after and the goodies should be back on the shelves. All shipments are supposed to come on the same day now. What day that is depends on the store, but it's supposed to be more scheduled now.

I haven't heard of the April 15 tax deal.

We have plenty of stock in all of the other areas but this time of year reloading gets hit hard. Too cold to be outside so everyone hunkers down and reloads. Goose hunting decoys are going to be the same way shortly.
 
Also has anyone thought that maybe they have not restocked there shelves due to these places usually wait until after the SHOT Show to put in there big orders for the year. I know that the shops around here are down on everything from guns to clothing to reloading supplies. A few years ago I went in looking for some shot and powder about this time of year. I asked when they were going to get some in they were out. They told me that they hadn't ordered anything until the shot show was over because they didn't want to miss out on anything that came out new for the year and that there order that they placed at the show had not showed up yet. I wouldn't be to alarmed yet. They should have the stuff by the end of the month. I know that it doesn't help now.
 
The demand for goods and services is on the rise, and the manufacturers have not or are unable to increase production to meet the demand in the short term.

A firearm manufacturer can not just increase the number of .308s produced if they have already re-tooled for .338s. Same holds true for the manufacturers of components. They try to forcast the demand for their product the best they can and like last year some companies fell short.

However, with the cost of raw materials constantly rising, the companies are timid about forcasting too high and not being able to sell all of the product or not being able to sell it for what it is worth.

The retailers and the manufacturers are aware of our desire for their products and will do what it takes to get the latest and greatest into our hands. An empty shelf is a missed opportunity for both the retailer and the manufacturer, which means less money they have to produce the correct number of toys for us to play with.

I have to pay taxes on my parts that are on the shelf according to my inventory count.

Same story at the sportsmans here in boise. I went to get a 1000 pack of primers a couple of weeks ago. They were almost completely out of all primers. When you ask them they keep saying "maybe on the next truck". cabelas here in boise was still well stocked a few weeks ago when i was there, but cabelas just raised all of there reloading prices. They were quite a bit higher than sportsmans to begin with. ie. imr 4895 was about 23.00$ at cabelas and 17.99 at sportsmans. varget at cabelas is now 26.99 about seven bucks higher than sportsmans. I do feel lucky to have both cabelas and sportsmans within 10 miles of home though. I guess I will quit complaining.
