Is Sport Wharehouse going broke?

I live on the MN border so I shop in Fargo ND. Last week they had all the reloading supplies that you would want ! Powder 14.99 lb , primers 2.39 @ 100 10% off brick , V max 40 gr were 12.99 @100 . I was at sportsmans ,Gander Mountain and Sheels ,all the same story. Guess were lucky up here in frozen tundra!!!! Mark

I'm just curious...

How is inventory "taxed" if its in the store after Dec 31? Last I checked the IRS takes a chunk of your earnings not your inventory!

Not so. A business has to claim the value of their inventory to come up with the final figures on their tax returns. Merchandise bought minus merchandise sold is gross proceeds. If you know what you bought, but have no idea what you have left, it's almost impossible to figure what is called "Cost of Goods". Also, Just because December 31 is the end of the calendar year, that doesn't mean it's the end of the business in question's FISCAL year. But don't ask me any more about how it works......that's what my Accountant gets paid to do. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Must be a State/local law. There is no inventory tax in AZ.

We have it here in Connecticut - you pay a tax on unsold inventory... so stores and factories (of all kinds) try to keep inventory down.

It's also why living in CT is so expensive, it all gets passed on to us! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Actually...if you want to get down to brass tacks (lol)...the IRS does not tax inventory anywhere. Apparently some localities do tax ending inventory though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

It's true that the IRS (KGB) doesn't tax inventory. But ANY accountant worth his salt, or a business owner who handles lots of inventory, will use that information on their EOY and in completing returns.

maybe the lack of in stock supplies is due to the fact that prices of ammo and components have gone through the roof. My thinking is that a lot of people who were on the fence about wanting to reload jumped on over and started with the price hikes we have seen. Thus the decrease of in stock merchandise. It is also tax return time and time to reload like mad groundhogs and prarie dogs. Just my 1/2 cent.

Here in CO we have an inventory tax based on actual inventory at the end of the calendar year. Some gun dealers in the Denver area offer substantial discounts the last 4-5 days of the year. My guess is, inventory tax is not the problem at SW. My friends at two Denver area stores reiterate what was earlier posted about the shortage of product in the market place. Lets hope, I sure would hate to lose them.

The Mesa store got a pretty good shipment a couple of weeks ago but then they ran a 10% off sale. The girl at the register said that a lot of people really stocked up on reloading supplies.

When that Bass Pro shop finally opens up, I think that it will really put a hurtin' on the Mesa Sportsmans Warehouse.

I have a feeling your right about BASSPRO making a dent in things...I live in central Phoenix and that Bass is going to be only 11 miles away! Right now the closest store to me that stocks powder, primers, bullets etc. is 21 miles away.

Guys,
I was just in Cabela's in KC last evening. They seemed to have full stocks of reloading supplies--bullets, powder, primers, etc. Stuff was marginally higher, but no so much so that it offended me!

Regards,
Tim

I'm not sure of the others, but Sportsman's Warehouse gives %10 off with a military ID; retirees and our law enforcement/fire/EMS brothers should try as well. OB

I hit the PHX store again Monday night. The shelves were stocked again. Didn't check the reloading area but at least it looked like they were going to stay in business for a while longer.

That's always been a sore spot with me....their inventory control sucks. I can understand running out of a few things now and then, but running out seems to be their normal MO.

Still cheaper and closer than Cabelas.

The new store in Rocklin CA got me all exited, it's really hard to find powders and primers around here within 2-3 hours drive. Unfortunately, they are out of stock of almost everything I need every time I go. When I ask, the answer is "It may come on the next shipment". How often do they get shipments? "Every day". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Thanks for nothing.

Wow , that sounds like bad customer service. My Sportsman , I can walk in and order something and when it comes in they call me. Sounds like it is time for you to talk to the manager. The Riverdale Utah Store is great. The Midvale Utah store is the pits and I don't go there anymore.

I've been to the Reno store twice and they were out of the primers and powder I wanted both times. I've been to the Provo UT store a bunch of times and they always have what I want. That's the best stocked store I've seen for reloaders.

When a retailer like "Sportsman wharehouse" goes to centralized and computerized wharehouse distribution system
we the shooter gets screwed. The re-order on "sold" products
is generated at the reigister when it is sold.

The retailer establishes how many of one item to stock in their stores. So if one of us goes in and buys 10 boxes of bullets the computer only orders 10 boxes for the re-stock.

If the bullets primers etc are in the wharehouse it get shipped if not then it has to wait another week for a Spotsman truck to bring the merchandize to the store and thats if it is back in stock in their wharehouse.

Sportsman Wharehouse, Midway USA and others control their wharehouse inventory by having the manufacturer ship to them on a 30 day rotational basis.

This is why the larger box stores are out of inventory
for up to 30 days.

As a further note Cabelas, now a public company, and Bass Pro are trying to establish and control national pricing
on the products we buy. As there is no Sportsman Wharehouse
were I live I am surprised at there low prices.

As Sportsman Wharehouse is expanding there competative pricing won't last long.

Cabelas was very price competative but after they became a "public company" their required profit margins are up
which is needed to finance their new store openings at over
$150,000,000 per store.

Go to the smaller local guys. Give them a shot. My local guy always has a vast arrary or powder and primers in stock and multiples of each. If he doesnt have it all he says is tell me what you want and put the money on the table it will be here Friday, it doesnt matter what day of the week it is as long as it isnt after 10 am Friday.

Went to local SW in Chattanooga yesterday.....

300 WSR primers. I bought them all.

NO .224 35gr VMax bullets.

NO Benchmark powder.

14 boxes of BlackHills .224 40gr VMax @ $22.95. I now own them.

When I asked one of the employees what was happening with the reloading supplies, he only said: /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I went to the Missoula store (SW) and thought I would pick up a bag of unprimed brass for my 44, there wasn't any; looked for a box of Hornady XPT/HP, there wasn't any. Went to Bob Ward Store and same thing so I went home with "wasn't any". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
