JWP, I fear that what you lack is a certain understanding of fundamental human character. Neville Chamberlain advocated the same course of action with regard to Germany during the build-up to WWII that Barack Obama and yourself advocate with regard to Iran. Chamberlain was a negoatiator, an appeaser. He, and the rest of the chic liberal movement in England and the States thought that a solution might be reached with negotiations and appeasement. But, history has shown us the the magnitude of this mistaken belief. It took a man like Winston Churchill to save the British.
You know, come to think of it, the same situation led up to Pearl Harbor. "Negotiate with the Japanese about oil, negotiate!!!" Then, Pearl Harbor. The whole time we were negotiating, they were making war plans. I believe that's exactly what that sawed-off SOB in Iran wants, too. He wants someone to try to be diplomatic, because it buys him time. Time to get those weapons together, then, a Pearl Harbor for Israel. I fail to see how anyone could think that Ahmadinejad (sp?) will be deterred just by sitting down and talking with him. That's like thinking it would have worked for Hitler. These people are sick and depraved individuals. If you don't believe me, you need only look as far as his rhetoric toward Israel.
We need only look at history to see what works and what doesn't work. The state of human affairs has not changed that much over the course of recorded history. The same fundamental vices that were problems hundreds, even thousands of years ago are still problems today. They may present themselves in different forms, but that is the only difference.
