Hunted by myself on Xmas day and made 11 stands and killed only one coyote. Traveled a lot of new areas near Jackpot Nevada back in the mountains in the Polaris Ranger. Didn't see many tracks in the snow of coyotes. Saw one heck of a lot of deer and some real nice bucks. Shot this one with the 17 Remington.

Nice going Jack! That area brings back a lot of great memories for me. My dad and I used to make the long drive from Vegas to deer hunt that area. Living in SW Idaho now, I'm much closer, but have yet to make a coyote hunting trip down there. Soon, I hope. There are some great big mulies in that area if you know where to look. Thanks for the pic!

No I didn't hunt on that side of the highway. I was hunting south of Jackpot Nevada on the border of Idaho and Nevada. Shoshone basin and then further into Nevada. Covered a lot of miles and seen a lot of new country. I was hunting near San Jacinto and Trout Creek, Boulder Creek, Cedar Creek. I tried to find someone to go down on Xmas day but pretty tough to find, as I don't know that area real well. I trapped for many years around Three Creek and into Nevada.

If you ever want to go down there let me know. I would like to take someone out that knows that area better then me. I have hunted down there a couple of times but not real familiar with the area. My wife gambles down there so she gets free room at Cactus Pete's and I hate gambling so I just hunt back in the desert while we are there.

I may take you up on that offer some time Jack. Probably couldn't feasibly do it until next fall, but I'm definitely interested. Not much of a gambler myself, but I've stayed at Cactus Pete's many times.

Lets do it. Send me a message sometime if you are coming this way. I don't mind taking people out hunting. Just wish there were more coyotes. Not like the olden days. Still coyotes but not like in the 70's when I was running 500 trap trap-line and when you weren't checking traps you could spotlight at night, wow was that ever fun. Now illegal.
Is your hunting partner getting into predator hunting?

Thanks Rick. Maria said you might be coming this way. If you come to southern Idaho I will give you my phone number. Me and Maria will take you to dinner or hunting if you have time.

i have hunted there off and on since the 70's not like it was the coyotes are hard to come by now.i think nev has done a job on the coyotes they are few in numbers through the whole state.

Jack,
By my hunting partner, do you mean my daughter in my avatar pic? If so, yes she loves predator hunting although she's only been once. My younger daughter would also like to go, and will, but both of them at the same time is a lot of work. As for my regular hunting partner, Jjess, he is very much into predator hunting and is a member here.
Do you live near Twin? I may be making a drive to Vegas next fall and will be traveling through the area. It's been 10 years or more, but I think I could still find my way around down there around Jackpot.

Yes your hunting partner in the picture. Yes I live near Twin Falls.
I don't have anyone that hunts with me on a steady basis. They all think I am to hard core. I stay out from daylight to after dark. I love the outdoors and would rather be there then anyplace. Most of the people I take don't have enough patience and would rather after a couple of hours hunting be home watching football. Nothing bad about football, I would just rather watch paint dry on the walls.

I would have to agree. I trapped the Three Creek area and years ago there were a lot of coyotes. I didn't see much sign or tracks in the snow. Generally if I see droppings or fresh tracks in the snow I am finding a place to call but there wasn't much. I just don't think where I was at that there were many coyotes. I just don't know that area that well around Jackpot, maybe I just wasn't in a good location. I felt pretty alone though at least...lol there wasn't a site of a vehicle or anything all day long. Some roads didn't look like had been traveled in a long time. Didn't have to worry about fighting off other hunters on Xmas day at least. lol

I'm with you on that one Jack! I can be pretty hard core myself at times, especially if I am far from home. I like to make the most of my time. I'll definitely let you know when I'm heading your way and we can put something together.

I took the Big Dog in the Idaho Classic back in January in the Three Creek area. I found out at the weigh in what's wrong with the area. I was talking to a guy whose dad runs cattle in the area. He said they aerial gun that area hard. I've hunted that area HARD at least 3 times in the past year making better than a dozen stands per day. Doing everything right, we pull on average 1 dog a day out of the area. I do better than that close to town. Not worth the drive.
