OK, this may cost me a call sale or two, but as someone with the experience, I'm going to make a statement.
I understand that there are those who feel that hunting from trucks is unethical.
And, everyone is entitled to their opinion.
However, the method of hunting coyotes, and ONLY coyotes, from a moving vehicle...then shooting them with a shotgun...is legal in the state of Kansas. Always has been.
The exception, is that you may NOT shoot while on a state highway.
If you are in a pasture, ect....and have permission to be on said property...then you are not breaking any laws.
Just the same as if you hunt from a truck, but use greyhounds (or other sight hounds) to chase down/catch the coyote.
There are plenty of people who deem that method as unethical, too.
And a lot of greyhound hunters think their way is the right way...but think that using shotguns, or using calls is unethical.
It's all legal in this state.
And whether it's ethical or not, depends on the environment you were raised in, as well as your definition of ethics.
None of which I will ever disagree about. As I said, we are all entitled to our own opinions.
Background, for the newer members, and why I feel I have the experience to discuss this calmly, rationally, & logically:
I am a 3rd generation coyote hunter.
My Grandpa started hunting with greyhounds in the 1940s, using a modified 4-door sedan. He hunted until the late 1960s.
His son...my Dad...started hunting at Grandpa's side as a small child. By the time he got out of high school in 1957, Dad was running his own truck & dogs. He did that until the late 1970s.
I started hunting coyotes at my Dad's side in 1972, at age 8.
By 1980, we had switched from using dogs, to using a shotgun. An Ithaca Model 37 8-shot, Cyl. bore, riot gun, to be exact. Using #4 buckshot.
We hunted that way for 15+ years, until 1995...when my Dad decided he was getting to old to "pound pastures".
So, in December 1995, I bought my 1st predator call & have been calling coyotes as my method ever since.
To this day, my dad still thinks that using calls is not the way to hunt coyotes.
I'll never go back to chasing them from trucks.
But, I also do not criticize those who do. I would be a hypocrite if I did.
All predator hunters & trappers need to quit in-fighting over methods used. It does nothing but give the anti-hunting crowd ammunition to take to our legislatures [sp] in order to impliment more & more limitations on our hunting & gun rights.
I hope I haven't offended or upset anyone here, as that was not my intention.
