Anybody know anything about the harrington & richardson handi rifle? i was looking at one today in a .243 for my 12 year old daughter for yotes and deer. I need something inexpensive but obviously I don't want to get her a piece of junk. What other guns would you recommend that are light enough for a 12 yr. old? Really would like a single shot. Thanks for any help you can give me.

When I was 12 (now 17) My dad and I went and looked at rifles and we looked at cheaper rifles. like the handi. theres nothing wrong with that but after looken at rifles for about a hour or so, I picked up a Browning a-bolt and fell in love ha...there a little high but worth ever penny(we split the cost) Shoots true to Brownings name...1/2 at 100 yards...

The best thing you can do is take her with you and let her shoulder the rifle and ask her how it feels and you will get to spend time with her.

I'm never going to sell mine. Its going to my kids after i pass.

nothing wrong with a handi rifle and you can get shotgun barrels to interchange with it. Remember a twelve year old girl is going to grow in ways a boy is not.

thanks for the info guys. i have two younger girls so the rifle i buy the older one will be passed down. Got a whole litter of 'em. Trying to teach the next generation to love hunting and keep the sport alive and well.

I have a TC Contender in 17 Rem that doesn't fit me at all. I decided to trade it off, then realized that it would fit a young grandchild beautifully. Eldest grandson is 6, can't wait till he's about 9 - 10? & can handle the little carbine. (Then 2 grand daughters ?)

A few advantages of the NEF for a new shooter are: it is easy to check the bqrrel for obstructions (snow, mud, etc.), There is NOTHING that can make the gun fire unless the hammer is cocked, not finger on the trigger, safety problems, or falls, They can break the action open when around other hunters. The triggers on the dozen or so that I have handled have been OK, It is easy for you to see if they have cocked the hammer, The youth synthetic stock is fantastic. What I set up for kids is .44Mag. There is cheap, low recoil load for high volume practice, and it is more reliable on deer than the .243 woth bad shot placement. The problem is that you have to orde the youth stock from Midway. The origonal stock is ease to sell on the internet. The 7.63x39 would be an other good choice. They bothe have plenty of power at the practical range fot kids. A fixed 2 1/2X or 4X shotgun scope works great. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif I sold one to a 11 year old. When he grew up, and bought a 30-06 I could not get it back. He still hunt with it. Claims that he killed every deer he shot at with it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Frank44, the youth stock can be ordered direct from H&R as well as from the maker, Choate Machine & Tool.

The 7.62x39 Handirifle was discontinued due to too many folks trying to shoot milsurp in em, the hard, recessed primers caused too many no fires, they shoot handloads and sporting ammo just fine and they are a good youth starter chambering, but so is the 30-30 and 357 Mag. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

WKYote,
first let me preface this by saying I am a HUGE fan of the NEF Handi Rifle! I own a 45-70,30-30,223,22 hornet, 20guage, and their sidekick muzzle loader. I had a .243 and I have to say it was really the only turkey that I ever had. If you go to greybeards outdoors to the NEF forum, you will see that that is not that uncommon with that caliber. What about a .308? They are one of the most accurate calibers in the handi, better range of bullet side, and I think you can get the Rem reduced recoil rounds for it. Personally, I think the 30-30 handi is an awesome rifle for the young 'un!

I'm a bit a fan myself, I just aquired Handi numbers 40 and 41 for my gun room, a 357mag and 44mag. An FYI for those that have been disappointed with the 44mag accuracy, older barrels were very overbore and required .432" cast bullets for any decent accuracy. Those made since Marlin started making the barrels this year have much tighter bores, mine slugs at .424" at the lands and .4285 in the grooves, haven't shot mine yet, just got it yesterday, but those that have 2007 made barrels are getting excellent accuracy with factory jacketed ammo, something that's been unheard of since the old ballard rifled H&R Shikari. The 44mag is another great round for a youth, good power within their range capability and low recoil.
