You're wrong on your assumption. I never intended it to start a debate. But think what you will. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Seems like it always a can of worms when it comes to the .223 and shooting animals.

The only thing worse would be if the question were: Should the bullet be moly-coated or not!

Never killed anything bigger than a coyote, but then I have never shot at anything larger either.

It is most certainly all about shot placement. I would rather see an ethical guy that is a crack shot shooting deer with a .223 than a two-day-per-year hunter shooting at them with a shotgun slug.

Having said that, I am glad Iowa doesn't permit them. Not to keep guys like you find on here from hunting with them, but to keep them out of the hands of the weekend warriors. I think the number of wounded-to-die-later deer would be much worse than it is now.

Pretty sure I said that back on the first page....grin

Not all "hunters" are on the same page, Jack. I'm with you, in your 223 thoughts, but....some guy's think that a 223 just isn't rifle enough for deer. I still fall back on this statement...."just because YOU can't do it, doesn't mean it can't be done, and done well!" (Steelhead) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Hunters and gun owners need to stop feeding the anti's and quit wanting everyone to do it their way.....
If you can't, don't.
If some one else can, then it's ok.
Ability to place a shot combined with knowledge of anotamy can be deadly.
Read up on Killimanjaro Bell to see what small calibers can do.

I din't bother reading all of the comments about is it humane...Texas deer are not as big as Northern deer...etc.

I have taken 3 or 4 deer with my AR-15, 2 of which were this year. I am shooting 65 Grain Game Kings reloads and they are pushed along at about 3,000fps. The doe I shot (no pictures) was hit in the back of the head at about 80 yards and the bullet exited just above her nostrils.
The buck I shot was hit in the chest and ran about 20 feet. Follow this Link to the story and pictures, including body cabity pictures of the damage done by the AR.

I will not hesitate to use my gun/bullet combo on any game animal 250lbs or smaller.

I have an old retired soldier buddy that due to a wound can't handle heavy recoil. He has used a 223 as his dder round for 20+ years. Here in Georgia we can take 12 deer a year. He usually takes 6-8 a year and has never lost one due to being wounded. When people tell him it is too small, he just laughs and pulls out his photo albums.

The right projectile in the right spot, The end result is a Humane kill! Nuff said!

In CO we cannot hunt anything larger than coyotes with a .223 so the point is mute but even if it were legal I would chose something bigger.

Well it is legal so make sure you educate yourself. Its not .223 remington it specifies the size of the bore under certin circumstances, such as during big game season.

"B. It shall be unlawful to hunt any game birds, small game mammals or furbearers, with a
centerfire rifle larger than .23 caliber during the regular deer and elk seasons west of
Interstate 25, unless the hunter holds an unfilled deer or elk license for the season he is
hunting."

Make sure you read all of it !

So your the guy that wounded that bigfoot, that I had to finish off with my .243!!! I personally wouldn't use a .223 on a bigfoot. But the bigfoot we have here in Kansas are much bigger then the bigfoot are out west!

My brother was a dis-believer also when it came to killing deer with a .223 until he grabbed the wrong gun case and low and behold what was in the case but a Ruger No 1 Varmint in .223,All I can say is he now leaves his trusty .270 Win at home after he killed 2 deer within 10 minutes of each other,One at 150 yards and the other at close to 200.Neither one ran more than 20 yards before they died.

other animal's brains are not enough bigger than deer's to matter. A 223 sp to the brain of a deer cracks the skull and pops the eyes out of their sockets. The brain is pulped, instantly and they drop like rocks. So a brain shot with a good 223 softpoint will drop elk, moose, or grizzly. Of course, there's no reason, short of shtf, to be doing so, but the potential is there. Bowhunters get within 50 yds of everything and within 25 yds of most things. So why can't you, hmmm? And since you can "reliably" hit a 2" wide prairie dog or crow at 200 yds, why can't you hit a 6" brain-circle at 50 yds? Again, no reason to risk it for normal times, but I'd certainly not hesitate to do so if I actually needed the meat. The reason you might be doing so is the Ar in 223's clear superiority for combat. Better to handicap yourself (a little bit) in the hunting fields than be stuck trying to fight with nothing more than a bolt action 06.

I have never shot a single big game animal with a 223. But my daughter and son have both killed at least a dozen white tails, beginning at 8 years old. I would not even begin to guess how many my father in law has killed with his contender super 14 and carbine.
