Lets see some JEEPS !!!!!

I have been flirting around with the idea of getting a jeep. It would be my 1st. Thought maybe you fellas might be able to give a newbie some pointers or atleast show off your jeep to help me decide what I like. I would be using it mainly for nice weekend cruises and wouldn't be doing any extreme off-roading. Lets see some jeep pics!

Not the best picture but, it's the only one I got!

'88 YJ - 2.5L 4 cylinder - 5 speed
3 inches of lift
Riding on 33x11.50-15s

Had the usual Jeep front-end don't lock syndrome, so I put the cable operated Posi-Lock system on it. Works sweet! No wondering if it's working anymore!!

I absolutely love it! It's a blast to rip around in, gets about 17 - 18 MPG in town, on the road, trail riding, wherever. Synchros are out in the tranny and it grinds gears occasionally, but it's been doing that since before I got it.

Paid a whole $2800 for it 3 years ago. Been tinkering around with it along and along, slowly getting it all back in shape. Licensed it - FIXRUPR -

Converted to electric fans for about what the fan clutch would have cost me...

Yes nice for sure, I am currently suffering from the jeep bug,
been looking for a while now, dont know if I should get one with all the goodies allready on one or start with a stock one,
from what I have been seeing in the adds it looks like it is a
spendy adventure either way.

I have been looking @ the newer 4 door Rubicons. Just recently sold my Road King scoot because it didn't involve the whole family. My 5yr old son was getting left behind. Wife said she'd like to find a 4 door. Anyway, I'd like to find one that has a slight lift & bigger tires & wheels. I like the wheels that are blacked out. If I could find one already done up the way I want, I'd like to go that route. Then I can just purely enjoy it!

It can be, doesn't have to be...

Paid $2800 for mine with the lift kit and 33s on it.

To date:

-- Replaced the steering stablizer before reading about the tire pressure, $30 - $35.

-- Put the Fan Kit in. I had right at $100 in everything compliments of E-Bay. That's dual fan kit, steel to build the framework to mount them, wiring, and I put a 3 way toggle switch in so we got on/off/auto on the fan.

-- Posi Lock was $140 - $150 when I bought it.

-- Replaced the battery last year $140 for the BIG Interstate to fit it, and put $800 worth of new 33 inch tires on it.

-- Replaced all the wire loom, breather hose, plug wires.

-- Picked up a spare tranny for $350.

All things considered, I've maybe put $2000 - $2500 in it since I bought it, but the new tires and battery were half of that.

You just have to monitor the ads and find the ones that are reasonably priced. Yeah, you'll get into a little fixing, but the older ones really aren't difficult to work on.

What model year do you consider they start getting difficult to work on? Just kinda curious because I sure do like the looks of the older jeeps! I'd just have to convince my better half that the 4 door isn't a necessity. The newer jeeps start getting into BIG money, especially if they have upgrades or add-ons.

Peronally, I would stick with something 95 or earlier either CJ or YJ bodystyle.

Try climbing in and out of CJ5 or CJ3 before committing, it can be a bit challenging for old fat guys. Especially if they've been lifted! I found I had more trouble getting out of it, than getting into it, because of the way the door opening is cut. Not enough room to get around the steering wheel and over that hump in the back of the door, kept hanging my back pocket on the door frame.

Not sure exactly when they started throttle body fuel injection, but that's a definite plus, as the carbs on them are reportedly JUNK. My 88 has throttle body, but I've read that throttle body wasn't stock until 92. By the same respect, oil filter for an 88 doesn't fit it, so I suspect the engine may not be original.

If you scroll up there and look at that under-hood picture of Doggin's, that's what you're looking for. My 88 has a few more wires than that, but not many more. Most of them located in the area of the carbuerator for the throttle body and related sensors. Somewhere in the mid-late 90s they started looking like every thing else under the hood, and they aren't nearly as much fun to work on when they look like that.

The 4.0L 6 cylinder is virtually indestructable; not the least bit uncommon for them to run 250 - 300 thousand miles. The 2.5L 4 cylinder is good for 200,000+. The jeep V6 isn't known to be quite as dependable. Don't think you'll pick up a 4 cylinder and swap engines, the 4 and 6 cylinder have different transmissions and transfer cases. It can be done, but it's usually a transmission and engine swap to make that happen. And, often that requires transfercase swap too.

While the newer 4 door jeeps do have a certain appeal, you are very much correct... They come with a seriously stupid price tag!! There is nothing in my book, to justify what they want for those. Likewise, there isn't anything to justify what many guys want for their older jeeps. Best advice I can give you is, set a limit on what you want to spend on "a toy" and start looking. Not sure about up there, but down here in Florida I could have bought at least 20 nice looking CJs or YJs for under $5000 in the last 6 months. Most of them in the $3500 t0 $3800 range, with lift, wheels and tires. Then of course you have those yo-yos that think their bone stock jeep is worth twice as much too, but they are out there for reasonable prices.

Biggest argument against the 4 door is... Price!

The more I look, I'm really digging the 1977-1981 Renegade CJ7's with factory v8 engine. Finding one that is in decent condition would be the hard part. I don't want a project. Maybe if I hang tight, I could find one that has been completely redone.

They're out there. Saw a couple listed in North Dakota/South Dakota last summer, and have seen 2 - 3 listed down here over the winter. That was a STRONG running engine back in the day. Keep your eyes open, they are around, and theres a lot more of them out there than you think.

I heard about a guy in Metropolis that has a body shop that rebuilt a wrecked 4door wrangler. I drove by but had no for sale sign back in the summer. A neighbor of the guy told me about it. It sure looked good though. If you could find a scrambler or a cj6 there are lots of room in them and longer wheelbase.

...so a cj6 has a longer wheelbase than a cj7?

That is info that is good to know. Thanks.

If you are looking for longer wheelbase the Wrangler Unlimited is longer than the Regular Wranglers. Besides the additional storage area they are rated to tow 3500 lbs vs 2500 for the Regular Wrangler.

Skip them they all came with the narrow track axles. After 81 they had the wide track axles...

As far as other issues, scramblers are cool but pricey. They also have bad departure angles. An 82 and up CJ or a YJ is probably the best bet. Fuel injection can be nice but carbs are good for the shade tree mechanic.

If I could I would have a new 4 door in a heart beat. The new 4 door with the rubicon package is without a doubt the most capable stock 4wd ever. That being said, it can take alot less time/money to make them unreal offroad machines.

I have had 4 jeeps over the years and the only one I have kept is the one I bought in high school.

I would strongly urge you to consider the last generation cj7 or the yj. Also when looking at v8s, realize that jeeps were never really designed for that much power. Sure open diffs and smaller tires the v8 is fine, but put in lockers, 35" tire, and things will break. Converting and 258 ro an amc 360 or 301 is really easy since they were all AMC they have the same bell housing and mounts can be had easy.

Here is my cj7 I have had since high school...
