Leupold Mark AR 1.5-4X anyone?

cheaper scopes with inferior glass can look clearer, but they wont gather anywhere near the light in low light situations.

Out of curiosity, why not?

For me, it boils down to the turrets. I despise non matching turrets and reticles, and have zero use for BDC anything. With the new scopes, they are mil/mil, with the BDC as an afterthought. I ignore the yardage indicators on the turret, and use the mil markings. I keep meaning to contact Leupold for a mil only turret, just keep forgetting.

I don't like the lack of indexing marks on the newer MOD Mark AR series. After 5 MILs, you're around 1 revolution.... with no indicator. Seems pretty easy to get lost when your up a rev (or two) in the heat of the moment.... did I spin it back to zero or not?

I also really like the .5 MOA clicks in the old version. You had 30 MOA per revolution... so you were never lost... you can't get around twice. I also think the half-MOA clicks are very durable and repeatable. I've broken two Leupolds with the standard 1/4" click target turrets.... but never a Mark AR.

Having a BDC turret is far more practical than most folks give credit. It's the same thing as a drop chart... it's just easier to access and use. I still have a chart that gives me dope on variables.... but when a coyote stops at 462, I just spin it a click past the "4.5" and easy-squeezy... never even taking my eye off the dog. Bet you can't do that with your 6-column drop/wind/alt chart taped to your stock... and then spinning it to the 6.75 MOA mark on the turret. I might miss a 1/2 MOA high or low.... but that's more than good enough when there's no time to spare. Try it... I bet you'll like it... but only if you build your own.

It's nice to have a reticle that matches the turret... but that's mostly for correction on second shots. I shoot Mil/Mil.... and the MOAR reticle in my Nightforce.... but I don't mind the MOA/Mil combo in older Mark AR. Where else can you get all those features for under $400?

6mm....let me know if you looking for another one. LGS has a case of the older Mark AR's they can't get rid of at pretty good deals too.

I know I may take a beating by saying this but IMHO Leupold has really dropped in my eyes as the premiere reticle that it used to be. I don't know if the name that had been well deserved and put into theater by our military is the same optic being produced today. I have several Marines that I work with that applied their service optics in the field that were less than pleased with the durability. I understand that the majority of us that shoot Leupold will never place these optics in the same forum. But I do believe when you get into that elite price range there is other options there. Leupold has been getting by on there name alone as of lately. I'm sure this will ruffle some feathers but I always like a lively debate.

I just purchased a Leupold VX-R 3x9 patrol optic with the TMR firedot reticle. This is a very nice piece of glass. I'm seriously considering switching out a couple of NIkon's and Zeiss scopes for more of these. Absolutely perfect for hunting and homeland security on a AR-15 platform or any other rifle
